I gave the one hour a shot yesterday and came up with 13371 meters, a "post-op" personal best and possibly a record. Actually, it is really a post-op first, since my two previous one hour sessions were done with the old PM1 which was limited to 59:59. It is really nice to work with the PM3. Thanks again, C2. My old one hour records of a decade ago were done on a club model C, so they were legitimate.

I kept the rate constant at 24 spm and the splits were about as even as I could get them, trying to hold between 2:14 and 2:15. A little sub 2:10 in the last couple of minutes, of course, but that doesn't have much effect in a 60 minute effort. I didn't raise the rate, just continued the 24 spm to the bitter end.

A side note: I use the PM clock to help keep a steady rate, but sometimes, especially on the first stroke, the clock seems to be erratic, just a tad slow on that first one and showing an occasional quick jump in the middle. Has anyone else had this experience?

regards,

Bob S.

I can pull maybe 5-6 continious strokes like that at 2:29 and then a 2:31 appears and then back to 2:29.

I don't think anything has change in the effort I have pout it but the C2 does. I think that the C2 is more sensitiv to slight differences that I never notice.

Don't know if that answered or not

PS I suspect holding 100 bpm would be easier for you Bob than me.
My max, based on the simple formula, is only 139. If I use the one that includes the resting heart rate it is even lower. But the problem is that the strap irritates the wires in my sternum when I am rowing. They are right on the surface and I can feel them with my fingers. It is O.K. when I use a treadmill, so I suppose that it is the arm action that causes the irritation. On the treadmill, I get occasional alarming spikes into the 140s and sometimes even higher. I don't feel any different, so I try to ignore them. I am sure that this probably happens a lot more on the erg, since I am often definitely working much harder on that than on the treadmill. If I am going over the max a lot on the erg, I would just as soon not know about it - especially when trying for a best shot - I wouldn't want it to inhibit me.

By strange coincidence, there was a heart surgeon at Xeno's when I did my 2k there last Friday. I mentioned the irritation from the wires to him, wondering if he knew of others that have had the same problem. To my embarrassment, he thought that I was asking him for free advice as to what to do about it. What he told me was that they could be removed and that it was a fairly simple procedure. Simple or not, I am not about to get into anything like that just when the main erg season is starting up.

regards,

Bob S.

Yesterday, I went for a 500 m to fill in the last of the 5 events that I posted last season, i.e. 500, 1k, 2k, 30 minutes, and 60 minutes. The other four are all well under my last season's best, but I was very disappointed to come up with a 1:50.2 for the 500 - a full second slower than last season. I tried another today, sandwiched in between the 1st and 2nd of three 15 minute pieces. It was even worse - 1:52.1. I have always hated sprints and this hasn't done anything to improve my feelings about them. Yesterday's attempt was also sandwiched into a regular workout, in between two 30 minute pieces. Somehow these workout sandwiches are turning out to be indigestible.

regards,

Bob S.

New 10K PB last night. The previous was 38:28 and I decided to go for 38:00 which was a bit adventurous on hindsight.
Got to 5K in 1:54.0, bang on taget but gradually slipped to 1:54.9 before finishing with a 38:16.0 (1:54.8) for a PB by 12 seconds.
I was totally wiped out afterwards.

Just had enough energy to lift 2 cans of John Smith's Yorkshire bitter to my lips
Later on I had a cup of Taylor's of Harrogate Yorkshire Tea. I think there is a bit of a theme coming on.

I think my 5K PB needs attacking next. I broke it (unofficially) when doing a 6K and I was only 8 seconds of it last night.

Another nice row John. You're having a good run at the moment, long may it continue. Reckon you will overtake my 5K PB next...

As today it's about 500's, and although it doesn't fit at all into my actual training schedule (focused on running a marathon): I also was there with Polaco:
1:30,3 down from 1:30,6.
Fast start and slooow finish: one and a half minutes give you time to get really exhausted!
