I've been training 6 to 8 times a week for the past 4 months and dropped my rate 24 2k from a 1:54.4 to a 1:47.6
7:37.6 in late August 2024 to 7:10.5 on December 12th 2024. I'm happy with my progress even though I went one stroke over rate on the piece. I have to do a better job of locking in on the 24.

While I agree with the controlling your own environment, I actually found I always hit PBs at competitions. You get that adrenaline rush and the overall atmosphere seems to help. I remember hitting a new PB for several straight comps.
I've always been a bit surprised by that. Racing starts, hot dry air and adrenaline working against me have always been an issue, but having said that my 2k PB was set at a race, so maybe you've got a point :D
The other thing is I would always be in my best shape and would have trained for the comp., so it was just executing.

As more of an introvert and one who generally shies away from being in the spotlight (certainly in-person anyways), I could definitely see myself being overwhelmed in a packed gym with 60+ ergs humming and coxswains/spectators shouting. If I end up doing CRASH-Bs in Feb, should be an eye-opening experience one way or another.
I'm the same, and I have to forget about that part of it. It was quite a strange feeling walking out to the erg with an announcement at BRIC in 2023. I'd much rather just sneak in and row.

Nice work Anthony, a 16k one hour was on my "to do" list all season, but my concentration span doesn't allow for such efforts

Well done, that's a big improvement. Just out of interest, why are you capping it at r24? Going one stroke over really isn't a big deal at all, so don't get caught up in details like that as it will become detrimental. Focus on the bigger picture, and you'll get more enjoyment and, consequently, progress.

Thanks all. Solid advice and encouragement from this forum has worked wonders.

I’ve signed up for an erg marathon in Hamburg 1st march, so will hopefully adding a marathon PB in a few months.

I mostly post on the Pete Plan thread but I feel like I can post an update here. Managed to break an 8 minute 2k finally. 1.59.3 @27 7.57.3.

Hopefully more to come as it was the third rep of a 3x2000.

Glad to hear! I've often felt as if I had the capability to break 8 minute 2k easily.

I originally planned to start the PP5k last week but my organisation was bad. I had to repeat a week, but at least got some baselines in. Before: 6900m 30r20 TT. My heart rate was about 210-ish at the end.

1:59.x r20 500m at the end of a 12*500m 1R with the rest at 2:04. 216 HR at the end, immediately after cooldown.

Maybe tomorrow on the 3 x 2k 3R i could warm up with a 2k and THEN maybe break 2:00 2k? It's to show myself I can do a sub-8 minute 2k. Then I will simply lengthen it to 7500m and also reduce the stroke rate.

You can go further Nomark! All you need is to blast very loud music and just press on with your wife and kids cheering. A race would help!

PS. This 4" and 36kg weight advantage is very, very significant. I am training 6x a week with some other weights/callisthenics training and even now i am not sure how far i can go for the 2k.

Maybe hold 1:59.x and then go all out while keeping the stroke rate from the previous? then after that a cooldown? seems nice, for a 3 x 2k 3R
