I think your first line there nails it. I row on my own in a dinghy garage, anyone in my life finds it all a little out the ordinary. Which is probably why the majority of us here embrace it. But yes, you'd need a mini holiday to justify the travel!

Yes!!! Well done! That reminds me of the great Steve Redgrave when he said after an Olympics, "if anyone sees me in a boat again, you have my permission to shoot me". Obviously, we went and won another gold medal four years later.

It's a great feeling when you do race and soak up the subsequent endorphin rush

Yep. I don't know anyone in real life to talk to about rowing apart from my inner chimp of course :wink:

Camaraderie is a very strong part of what we do, and is definitely a great part of competing.

I think we may have been in the same race. Also, 1 second improvement for me too 6:37.7. Was hoping for more but my legs felt like jelly throughout and I couldn’t muster the final sprint. Still though, was a great experience and will be doing it again. Got my first otw head race next weekend which I am looking forward to but not the cold!

Just noticed you’re in LWT. Fantastic result. Your 5k time definitely needs another attempt!

Congratulations Anthony. It's really tough to PB in a race, with the dry air and racing start.

I apologise for saying I'd be there and then subsequently bottling it, although it was the right decision all things considered.

Everything is good thanks, but too many recent nights out and quite stressful recent weeks at work have taken a toll. Going to a gig on Friday night was the main reason that I knew it would be a bad idea, which was borne out to be true.

Next year will (hopefully) be better and I'll prioritise it if at all possible.

Well done! It sounds like you had as much 'fun' as me! My legs were like jelly too, which I was hoping if just from nerves would be fine once I got going, but I was also hindered by anxiety about making weight. Which whilst in the end I was fine for it did mean my nutrition and hydration wasn't as good as it should have been for the preceding 24 hours. I don't have to work hard to make sub 75kg but nonetheless it was a stresser. I'm glad I had a solid race plan in my head because in the event my head was mush. I practise my race calls in my head every time I row the last 2K of a SS session so I only need the smallest glance at the metres left to know what I should be doing and how many strokes are left at any point. In my race group I was beaten into 3rd place by a tenth, but 2nd place was well over-weight so wasn't classified. Immediately post-race my head was still mush so I wasn't sure how I felt about being beaten by a tenth, until I learnt I was 2nd.

On the subject of attending in the first place: Indoor rowing events seem to encourage a feeling of "I'll only turn up if I think I can finish competitively". At least, I am personally guilty of this, and I am lucky that I can make it as a lwt quite easily. If lwt didn't exist would I have gone? But, very few people sign up to a local running race (half marathon, marathon, etc) with the expectation of placing, they sign up for the experience of training, turning up and performing as well as they can on a personal level. All of us will applaud anyone else simply attempting to row a distance as fast as they can regardless of the result, because we know what a mental and physical challenge it is to train consistently and perform, but do we hold ourselves to different criteria with regards the competitive element? Not sure, perhaps I'm missing the mark or failing to get my point across well. But it's a shame these events aren't better attended, and now I've done it once I fully intend to go again with a more relaxed attitude to placing.

Completely understand. I am fully aware I am a long long way off placing in my cadre, but I know very well that I need a goal to aim for or I’ll just not bother. Once I have a goal though, I have determination, so that’s what motivates me. It’s a small price to pay for that.

Very happy I don’t have to worry about the weight side of things! That’s what would probably stop me of if I had that to contend with! :)

On another note - it’s not often I feel small!!!! There was huge fellas in that race!

Great comment. I've attended two BRICs, knowing that I'm not in top form, and I just want to compete. One year I hurt my back only a month beforehand and it totally derailed my training, but it was good to attend anyway and row with less pressure.

Last year's was a pleasure as the fella next to me got a 28 second PB!
