Pulls on the Strength Erg

Post by Dave Neve » October 24th, 2024, 2:33 pm

Hello

I've been watching videos and thinking about this.

There are some seated rows where you don't have a pad in front of you and they work since you brace with your legs
but normally, all seated lat pull machines have a front pad against which you brace your body

The Strength Erg doesn't (note the Dyno did have this)

So I'm wondering that if you are really going heavy, how can you reach your maximum pull without a pad to brace against?

In the Concept 2 video, the guy seems to manage but that's a promotional video and he does not seem to be at his max. weight.

My guess is that you'd be dragged forward on the Strength Erg if you tried for your max. weight achieved on a conventional seated lat pull machine with a front pad

Any thoughts on this?

It's the same as doing seated rowing on a cable machine, which is a several decades old exercise. The difference is, your back is locked, so you can't work with momentum like on the cable row (which is good from my point of view).
Another exercises to compare with are barbell rows, the same principle applies.
The machines with a pad to support your upper body exclude the need of stabilisation, but you can fully focus on max strength in the pull itself, so both have their advantages and none of them is "right" or "wrong".

No problem, someone else probably thinks the same, so it can stay here :)
