Managed to fit in a HM during work yesterday. A strict 20 spm at a fixed pace SS has a meditative appeal for me. It was warm and humid which perhaps contributed to the high HR.

Code: Select all

Time Meters	Pace	Watts	S/M	HR
1:29:18.6 21,097m	2:06.9	171	20	142
18:12.2 4,300m	2:07.0	171	20	135
18:12.2 8,600m	2:07.0	171	20	139
18:12.2 12,900m	2:07.0	171	20	146
18:12.2 17,200m	2:07.0	171	20	146
16:29.9 21,097m	2:07.0	171	20	148
Today I only had time for a UT1(ish) session, which is one of my favourites. A strict 20 spm and fixed pace again.

Code: Select all

Bit of a tangent but I train, whether it be on my bike/erg/lifting weights because I enjoy it, and the hard work that goes with it, but that part should be on my terms. The moment I start letting my life try to fit around it, rather than the other way round, I know I'm heading down a slippery slope. I don't respond well to losing weight and I've been down this road before.
Sorry to hear that you're still struggling with your injury, and some other issues too, but your sessions are still very good.

I do find it fascinating the huge significance of stuff that can be totally unseen to others and how people manage, or don't manage to keep it under control. The forum, by its very nature, is quite one dimensional unless we add further information and that can be misunderstood / downplayed etc so the true relevance is easily lost, as one person's stress could be another's fuel.

Your comment about the interaction of life and training is something that really can be the make or break for people, as identifying as an erger can be a double edged sword, as Justin very wisely refers to. I flip flop between different identities depending on life moments, and I'm currently in a markedly less competitive moment.

This felt quite a lot better than expected despite feeling tired and having another brutal pilates class yesterday, which has to be experienced to be understood as I'm sure that at least some of you must think it can't be that tough.

Btw this isnt a criticism, as I've seen many people over the years think the same thing and never return, but I'd say at its worst it's comparable to the hardest intervals sessions

As I am a very poor runner technique wise, both wouldn't be achievable for me at all. My latest 400m trial was slightly below 70s. A 2k trial (nearest to a mile what I did) was 7min 46s.
Curious about your journey in running though
No running journey per se here - just something to keep me occupied with while training on the road. When I was at my fittest with both tennis and running, I would say the 400m would be a smidge easier, but my tennis days were a long time ago. I think the 5:00 mile for me would be a bit tougher to get but it doesn't mean it's off my radar entirely. My brother, coming from a sprint background, said in his mind the 400m time would be a bit easier (quite a bit so for him) and things more in the range of 54-56 is on par with a 5:00 mile. All of that said, I think that going for something shorter and faster right now fits where I am at mentally as well as physically, and I think as I'm getting a bit older and approaching 40 soon, it would be nice to get some speed back which hopefully I can extend into longer stuff.

I haven't ran a sub :60 400m since I was a junior track runner, so I'm inclined to say the former! But the mile, much like a 2k Erg piece, is a different kind of suffering. I am well out of shape for both now, but I would feel more confident in getting back to running a sub 5:00 mile than I would running a sub :60 400m, I just wouldn't get the raw speed back.
An all out 1500/1600/mile or 2k on the erg is just brutal. I do think though that a proper 800m on the track or 1k on the erg might be the most painful of all. Like you, I agree that speed leaves and is harder to get back than endurance, but it makes me want to try and get some back even more so!

As a former “runner” and have trained for both a 400 and mile I would tell you that those two goal times correlate very well. If u have the fitness to run a 5:00 mile then 60 sec 1/4 is right in the wheelhouse. Whats easier? I would say 400s. Requires less time and volume but an all out 400 is painful!
My brother seems to agree and the more I thought about it and digested it, I would agree as well. I don't think either will be easy per se but I do think getting a sub-:60 400m would be the logical one to check off first before either going a bit faster or stretching the speed out longer for a sub 5:00 mile.

10/18 - Light cardio / aerobic work today (more recovery than anything). 60 mins on the treadmill, 10% incline, 3.3mph, 10kg weight vest. Average HR was 120 bpm and never crossed 128 bpm even though I was in a hoodie to get core temp up and sweat a bit.

Work has been something else to say the least and while I'll be working Saturday and Sunday, it will be strictly from where I am staying without having to head out for meetings, appointments, etc. That said, I will likely train twice both Saturday and Sunday as my Monday schedule looks to prevent me from getting training in. The tentative plan is a hard cardio / run session Saturday AM, an easy lift Saturday PM, an easy cardio / aerobic session Sunday AM, and a hard lift Sunday PM.

It’s been a long long time but seems to me we used to do 63-64 second 400 meter repeats which translated to a 4:45-4:50 ish mile and my all out best 400 was prob :56???? Might be off on that

Hahaha, a word of warning. I've had maybe five or six different instructors over the years, and they're not all as good as each other. Classic pilates can be a bit boring in my opinion, and doesn't really test me, but when you make it hot (36 degrees) and dynamic, then it's a totally different effort. Similar to steady state and a TT.

I'm not sure how many dynamic pilates classes / teachers there are, as I've only ever found one, but if you can find one, I'd definitely recommend it.

I've got a pretty good handle on HM and FM training for running as that is what I was most interested in but am really not too informed on 400m or 1600m training. The best I could figure is looking at 500m erg training and building a running plan that's similar for the 400m and at 2k erg training and building a running plan that's similar for the 1600m.

I think this is the lowest HR, lowest rate and slowest pace I've ever seen from you. Anyway, get moving is vital, so it is always a good decision :)
It was definitely a very rare session, but I knew I would regret it later on this week if I didn't do something like this, not least as there's no possibility that I'd be able to get back to sleep.

Either due to the slightly higher humidity or my world class ability to sweat, I still managed to have a few beads of sweat on my brow. It was planned as being a similar effort to replace the brisk 5k walk.
Applaud getting something done.

I feel the same Stu. I have been making good progress right now but I also just don't have the drive to a goal like normal knowing I can't match my past results. I know I can still got to local comps when the season hits and win my age group but I don't have a tom of desire to do that while going 10 seconds (maybe more) slower for a 2K. I am trying to enjoy workouts again as opposed to being mad when I don't hit targets,

I'm hoping that time, with a very low volume approach, will be a healer for the calf.

I think not just recognising, but being comfortable with the different identities in life, is something I need to accept. Maintaining a level of fitness isn't ground breaking stuff, getting there is the testing part!

Cheers, more in there though.

Wasn't an actual concerted PR attempt, RPE 7/8?
