First go at the October CTC. Perhaps a little conservative on the longer intervals just to make sure I finished. Now I've got a time in I could maybe get close to 20 mins next time.

As I am a very poor runner technique wise, both wouldn't be achievable for me at all. My latest 400m trial was slightly below 70s. A 2k trial (nearest to a mile what I did) was 7min 46s.

It's a question of what kind of athlete you are and how good your sport specific technique is.
My training partner could run a 59.x 400m after a few tries without training for it, when I ran a 69.x at the same time (also with no training for it). For the 2k run he got to a 7:22, when I got my 7:46.
On the erg this is a completely different world. My 2k is 6:37 and probably already a bit soft, he struggles to get a flat 7, his best is 7:12 (nearly same weight, he is a little bit taller, so no question of body type). His 500m 1:29.7 to mine 1:26.4 (inofficial), so on shorter distances we get closer, as technique gets less important, but even there I am a good bit faster. Only at 200m he could beat me recently, but I'm confident to say, it's only for a few days :lol:

Joined a 30min session on Rowpro this evening, not much happening on there these days. Not sure if Rowpro 6 will ignite it once launched officially?

I dropped out after about 5 mins due to flat battery in my Surface Pro which I've not used for quite a while.

As a former “runner” and have trained for both a 400 and mile I would tell you that those two goal times correlate very well. If u have the fitness to run a 5:00 mile then 60 sec 1/4 is right in the wheelhouse. Whats easier? I woukd say 400s. Requires less time and volume but an all out 400 is painful!

I think of another marathon attempt and probably a 50k too. Not accurately planned yet, but it is already staying longer in my mind, so I increased some of my steady sessions to see, how my CVS can handle it currently. Aside of this, I enjoy these long sessions with good music :lol:

Enjoyed this, comfortably hard whilst leaving a little in the tank. Some life stresses and this darn issue with my calf/foot has thrown a spanner in the works and that enthusiasm I had took a rapid decline.

Bit of a tangent but I train, whether it be on my bike/erg/lifting weights because I enjoy it, and the hard work that goes with it, but that part should be on my terms. The moment I start letting my life try fit around it, rather than the other way round, I know I'm heading down a slippery slope. I don't respond well to losing weight and I've been down this road before.

Having Bluetooth connectivity issues is a good excuse to just hop on and do what I fancy on the day, no technology and online logbooks or seeking external validation (absolutely nothing wrong with this!). I've mentioned before about missing a competitive element in my life but if I'm being really honest with myself, I probably don't. That's not to say I won't in six, twelve, eighteen months down the line... but right now, I couldn't think of anything worse than a 2k specific prep ahead of BRIC. If I wasn't a bleeding 5 hour drive away I'd certainly come and watch, mind.
Bummer to hear about the calf; nagging/chronic injuries or pain can really dampen the enthusiasm for training, speaking from personal experience with hip and pelvic issues. Hope you find effective ways to manage through it.

I can certainly relate to the challenges in finding balance w/ training vs. the rest of my life. At times I've caught myself swinging too far towards optimizing my day-to-day around training, and for me that is a slippery slope that I seem to routinely be on the precipice of. I chalk it up to having a bit of an addictive personality, which as I'm sure many of you can relate, can be a double-edged sword...

~12 months now since getting back on the erg I've found myself flip-flopping through periods where I find genuine joy in the training (intrinsic motivation), and other periods where motivation is low and I'm grinding through it solely because I feel like I have something to prove to myself or others (more extrinsic motivation)... Who those "others" are I can't even really say. I'll blame my inner child for that, who was bullied throughout elementary school and then went through high school and college with a massive chip on his shoulder. It's not a headspace I enjoy being in, and makes me question how much longer I will want to train at this level.

The thought of doing 2k prep right now sounds similarly terrible to me; but with a title to defend at next February's "Golden State Indoor Rowing Championships", I'll need to start preparing for that in early December!

Been a bit since I've posted here; I hope everyone's training is going well as we head towards the darker, colder winter months...

I've been sharing/posting my daily training updates (the good and the bad) the last few months via my instagram (jbrown1215), so if you're interested, you'll find me there. Have averaged ~320k/month this season so far, with a couple heavier 400k+ months and a couple slower months as I've taken vacations and other small breaks. Overall I've been very pleased with the continued progress on the erg, and was able to knock out a number of PBs over the summer.

Aside from the erg, I started getting back out on the water in August, and was able to get a handful of practices in with a masters crew as they geared up for the Head of the Charles (happening this weekend!). I thought that my fitness and erg scores might help offset the lack of water time and earn me a seat in the 40+ masters 8+, but alas, it was not to be. Coach essentially told me that my form was still a bit too rough; turns out 16+ years of rust doesn't go away in only a few sessions. Quite humbling, and a great reminder of one of the most cliched truisms in rowing -- ergs don't float!

I'll decide at some point over the winter if I'm willing to commit to on-water practices for a full ~6 months or so leading up to next year's HOCR...

My wife also just gave me permission to buy a BikeErg, so I'll hopefully find a used one in decent shape soon to add to the garage gym. I'm excited to get more biking & running in this winter season to keep things fresh!

Thanks Justin, that's a brutally honest response. We all exercise our own issues in life and prioritise might have to adjust accordingly. I only picked up the Erg December last year and it absolutely reignited the flame for an athletic competitive drive I hadn't seen in years. Taking in to account an op in March ruling me out for six weeks, to go sub 6:24 this summer suggested I was/am half decent at this!

On reflection, I probably jumped in to the deep end to get in to that shape just a little too soon and a culmination of external factors, some of which I was hiding away from, have caught up with me. For one, I'm a shift worker and my sleep pattern this year, if I can call it that, has really thrown a hard right hook at my body. I'd be going in to hard sessions sleep deprived fueled by caffeine and ignorance. My asthma has also been flaring up, something I was only diagnosed with two years ago and has never previously been an issue. I see a Dr in three weeks to address these two issues. Essentially, I need to get my health in order.

Sorry to derail the thread! No Erg'ing today, but I did squat my bodyweight for 20 so my sprinting might be heading in the right direction...

I've no doubt you'll be in top shape come February and that we'll see that 6:15 tumble!
