foot pain/sesamoiditis/modify flex foot

Post by alanmushnick » September 25th, 2024, 3:28 pm

hi
I need some help. I have sesamoiditis on the left foot. I took the flex foot off the metal foot rest. the angle of the top of the flex foot presses on the sesamoid bone. I need to modify this or something that is flatter or will permit more of the heal and midfoot and less ball of foot bending or contact.
Any help or photos of modifications is appreciated
I have a Model C that is still great after all these years.
PM5 and new oar handle added over the years.

things get quiet when asking for medical advice.

Suggest you see a doctor or physical therapist or talk with whoever diagnosed sesamoiditis. They can rule out broken bones, a simple bruise, etc. A good PT can also tell you if adjustments to your rowing form are needed, and which are safe and which will cause future knee/foot problems.

Not a doctor. This https://my.clevelandclinic.org/health/d ... samoiditis gives typical treatment for sesamoiditis. REST, NSAIDS, etc.

After you talk to doctor or PT, note that the setting of the height of your foot in the stretcher is settable by adjusting which holes you use, and that this will shift how much ankle flexibility is needed to get your heels down so you can press from your heels. When rowing shins should not get past vertical, which will also change when your heels come down. Some excellent coaches also suggest NEVER taking your heels off the stretcher to enforce good form while you are learning to row. example https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YRHEd7W5qVU and https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M6oYDu3EO6M That would also allow you to press more from the heel. The video may also correct form errors that cause you to drive more from the balls of your feet. Perfect form has pretty consistent pressure across the balls of your feet and the heels. Getting to perfect form require emphasis on getting heels down and driving from the heels.

GL and hope you get pain free. Do see a doctor or PT if you haven't already.

Hello

I have a different problem with my feet or more precisely my toes (hallus rigidis) and I have special inner carbon soles for walking, which make a great difference

I can see that there are inner soles for sesamoiditis too but I've no idea if they work and even if they do, does that include on a rower.

Hope this helps

thank you Tsnor for links to those videos.
I have never been a “real” rower. just have been using my Model C for 30 years interrmittently for fitness.

those videos are very good. I keep my feet flat now.

so far that has helped a lot.

Excellent.

If you are willing to look at two more very short videos, these are excellent. Good form will protect you, especially your back as you get stronger.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zQ82RYIFLN8 Correct Rowing Technique
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oP6OR-G7AxM Common Rowing Technique Errors

Both are from concept2 Australia and are wonderful.
