I am comfortable with a 60 min row and had estimated that slowing the split time down to 1:52 would keep my HR at a level where this split could be sustained.

It only really started to go above the 85% when I increased the pace and so the 1:52 turned out on the cautious side but this was how I had planned it so happy with that. (I was a bit concerned that it may have been too optimistic given that 1:52 would increase my previous best by over 500m.).

Best of luck with the planned 16,150as this will then give me another incentive to go further.

Neil

Inspired by a host of sub-6 2k times just turned in at Leander BC in Britain, and by the fact that my mother-in-law is in the living room until tomorrow (thus I've every reason to stay on the erg all day), I just yanked a PB 2k: 6:27.5. Splits: 1:36.7, 1:37.1, 1:37.8, 1:35.9.

I started my sprint with about 300m to go and came in pretty consistently at 1:34s, so clearly could have gone faster....

I'm still not getting layback or my hands away before my knees, but that last bit in particular I was coming forward quite properly.
As Mae West might have put it, it's amazing what 6 extra inches a stroke will do. When I find the other 8 or so I'm missing, look out*

*True, as Ranger no doubt will remind me, some lightweights are still both older and faster....

Whether you're mentally ready to let fly at a 1:35 or 1:36 pace is another matter. To do it you've got to believe you can do it, and that has everything to do with your personality, your training, your coaching, and how you feel the day of the test. All of which you yourself are best placed to evaluate.

FWIW your 16703m is not that far behind Alex Hall (Ash on the nonathlon), another 19-year-old who's done 16776 for 1 hr. And he's gone sub-6:15 this season.

I say go for broke and aim for 6:20, but what do I know.....
