Congratulations to SPU: Te Waka for making an excellent leading start to the new season.

The Diamonds produced another stunning flotilla of 75 boats.

I've checked the records while they are still there on old site and found that the Free Spirits position in the Challenger chart was incorrectly calculated. My mistake for which I apologise.

FIN KeU, FIN VS and Centenary Rowers Australia, as new teams with at least three consecutive entries, have qualified for a challenge BUT must get in touch with me on either the C2 forum or facebook page to activate this.

July CTC

Here's an early heads up for the July Challenge.

The Diamonds (Over Sixties Erging Group) have chosen;

''The Super Sixties Simple 6k''

Recent CTC's have been a bit sprinty so this is a chance to bring some slower/longer stuff in.

As an over 60's team it's a play on our name which we always like to do plus it's also a rankable distance and using the C2 rankings is something we always promote in our team.

It should fit in well with most peoples training at this time of the year and it's nice and simple too....just row 6k as fast as you can...what could be simpler and easier to set on the monitor.😀

Hopefully it will help all teams to get a good turnout. 👍

Congratulations to SPU: Te Waka for maintaining their excellent start to the season by finishing on top of the leaderboard in the June Challenge.

The Diamonds floated 81 boats which, I believe, is their second highest total. That's a fantastic level of participation.

I’ve put some suggestions to the RowAlong Facebook group for the August CTC.

The leader, and my choice, is Tabata x 3 with two minute rests. (8 x 20 seconds on with 10 second rests)

However. For those who don’t use an app to program their monitor, this will take a bit of button pushing. (I will post a button sequence).

I just want to let you know beforehand that I do get that it’s not as simple as punching in a 2k!

Decision will be made next week.

I'm pleased to say that the August 2024 Cross-Team Challenge is going to be Hakuna Tabata.

What's that? It's three TABATAS with two minutes rest in between.

So that means you're gonna do 20 seconds on, 10 seconds rest, eight times, after the eighth one you take two minutes rest, then you do that again, take two minutes rest, and then do it again, and you're all done. Like this:

And what you're going to enter is your total meters covered in those 24x20 second intervals. NO REST METRES! The first rep from a standing start, all the rest as you wish.

Now, you might think that programming this into your monitor is the tough bit. It isn't, the row itself is.

The simplest way to do this is to use the ErgZone app. You can just pre-program your PM5 monitor if you have one using ErgZone. You can download ErgZone from the app store, whether that's iOS or Android.

However, I do understand that lots of people don't want to use an app, or maybe you have a PM3 or a PM4, in which case, I've posted the button sequence for this below. Press your buttons, and it should all work out correctly. But just remember, this is 24x20-second intervals. The first seven of them have 10-second rest. The eighth one has two minutes rest. And then you do that again, and then you do it again.

As far as the rules of the cross-team challenge are concerned, if you'd rather just have 24 intervals of 20 seconds on and 10 seconds rest, then you can do that. As that's actually going to be harder than what I have planned. So as far as the rules are concerned, you can do that if you wish.

But like I say, the hard part about this workout is actually doing the row, not programming the monitor. So really, you're going to want those two-minute rests between in order to be able to hit this one as hard as you really want to! I've done this one a few times for my RowAlong channel. And each time I've done it, I've ended up breathing out of my ears by the end, because it really is a high-intensity interval workout.
It's something different to the normal. Showing you that you don't have to do a 2K or 8 x 500 meters every time you sit on the Concept2. There are different ways to use it. As such, I'm really looking forward to seeing some of the results for August.

Hi, I am totally confused about the PM4 programming. What does the A B C D E F refer to?

PS in my case I cannot see me doing the 10 secs rests. 2 mins 40 secs and 2 minutes rest would be a lot easier for someone like me who can do a faster pace at a 500m than a 100m.

The letters are the buttons down the side. A is top, then B etc. The numbers are how many times you press the button.

And your comment about the row is exactly why this is worth doing as it’s suggested. This row should put you at total sprint maximum for the entire workout. It’s like doing 24x100m - which is still a different animal from a straight 500m row.

Of course, the intensity of this workout may be too much for some rowers from a health point of view. In which case id always suggest listening to the body, not the ego!

Wow, how high do you rate on 100 & 500? I row 200m at a slightly faster pace than 100 due to time lost at start (certainly with "race" start, and sometimes on standalone row), but in 100m I am >60SPM as opposed to mi to high 40's for 500m. Very inefficient and need to warm up a lot not to risk my back, but as a weak lightweight my pace for 100m is 15S/500m faster than 500. To optimise your time on this, I suggest doing at 3 x 4', but easing off for the stroke after the end of each 20" interval and then building up, but concentrating on timing the start of each interval so you are pulling the chain as it starts (otherwise there will be dead time in your result when clock is running but no metres added).

I havent done a 100m this season but last one:

100m 25.3 secs 2:06.5 pace 45spm
500m 2:06.4 pace 35spm

I am a slow starter, and always look better on the longer distance. 59 year old LWT here.

I expect it is to do with being a bit chicken to whip the handle at the start due to prior back injuries. More recently 2 hip replacements.
