Sometimes the best workouts come at the most unexpected times...

Half Marathon PB today! I believed I'd have the fitness to beat my 1:16:15 from May, but had no idea by how much... Set out with a game plan of sitting on 1:47 for the first few kilometers, and adjusting up to 1:48s if needed. A third of the way through, was still feeling surprisingly good and springy at 1:47, and the belief that I could hold it for the remaining ~14k took hold. There were a few uncomfortable kilometers in the middle, but more so due to posterior pain and hot spots on my hands, less so due to (lack of) fitness or my legs giving out. Pleased that I was able to power up over the last ~2k to crack a sub-1:47 average. And because I'm always my own worst critic, my first thought upon finishing was "damn.... so close to sub 1:15...". Next time!
Holy smokes! .....amazing pace for a HM
Ditto. 1:47 pace is right between my 1K and 2K PBs pace. Plain scary :?

Half way through rowlympics with 3 PBs to update. Nothing as stellar as Justin’s unfortunately!😊

6k - 21:43
30 mins - 8179
10k - 37:09

1k and 2k to go.

Anyone got any tips to to pace 10 mins off? I’ve never rowed that time before. My 2k pace is around 1:38 at the moment.

Great work on 3 pb's. We all face our own battles in this sport, that's the beauty of it (not to diminish Justin's achievement of course!).
Re the ten mins, I'd probably trial an 8 minute a notch slower than your 2k and base it off that.

Great work!
I would start a 10min at 2k+3 and see how it goes. It is ca. 1.5 times a 2k time wise, so it will land on ca. 3k distance wise. ~+5 for doubled distance, so +3 could match as first estimate.

Great results Anthony 👏. In all reality, Justin's HM is an elite amateur result, so you really are talking about a vanishingly small amount of people who could match that.

As Alex says, it is all relative, and the stellar results can be extremely fast or just a massive improvement compared to expectations, so don't downplay what you've achieved.

Congrats on the PBs! And all done in a short amount of time. Impressive. Each of those are mentally daunting enough to me that I'd have to spread them out at least a week apart :). Good luck on the 1 and 2k.

Very very impressive result Justin, and that last 1097m is rude. It's a really shocking thought that you could have gone sub 75 mins if you 'just' committed a bit earlier on. Incredible.

Thanks everyone; very much appreciated. Great to see some of you knocking out big PBs as well! This was one of the most satisfying PBs I've hit to-date, perhaps because it was completely unexpected and not something I had been bracing or specifically preparing for. Mentally I was needing a challenge / test after a slower July, and this happened to be the test that felt right. Good validation for me that the continued heavy dose of steady state volume is having the desired effect...

In perhaps the next chapter of my return to rowing, I may be getting back on the water in the next few weeks... I've managed to find a club that has a strong contingent of former college rowers like me (who are also now well into their 30s and 40s) who race at the Head of the Charles and a few other big-name regattas each year. It's an hour away, so realistically I could only get down there a couple times a month, but it's the most competitive masters club in this region, if not the state. I was told that their 40+ masters boat is averaging around 16:40 for 5k on the erg , so will certainly need to work hard to earn my seat! Regardless, I'm excited to get back in a boat and see how my fitness translates to the real deal all these years later.

Summer 2021 was when i got the C2 and so Rowlympics was the first Challenge I remember.

Was fun to row against myself and beat all the times/distances, including PBs for 2k / 6k / 10k.

We'll see how the training is going in 4 years as I may well want to conveniently forget these stats comparisons by then! :)
