Today is the Day 1 of RAGBRAI - the weeklong ride across Iowa. Two of my golf friends are participating this year, so I've paid more attention to this iconic ride. 30,000 cyclists will be starting out this venture, and the average humidity is somewhere in the 70 percent range with temperatures in the 80-90F zone. SHIFT is a documentary about the ride that's only 57 minutes. It's streaming for free and I recommend it to anyone who is considering doing this ride, or other rides that are lengthy. These rides change you as a human, and some of that is pitting yourself against the elements and knowing that YOU have to solve the issues that you encounter along the way. For me, whether it is completing a Concept2 Challenge, or doing a bike event from start to finish - it's like keeping your word to yourself. Only you know that you've made a commitment, but somehow that means a lot in moral compass land about how you feel about the human you were meant to be. Some of it might also be the amount of time you have for introspection while you're riding. You get that with erging, too - but the scenery only changes with the movies you're watching or the Zwift countries you're riding through! It's supposed to be a great party ride, and there will surely be some hardy young party goers...but 30K riders going through some of these smaller towns....it's both an economic boom and perhaps a bust depending on the clean up required. 424 miles total this year.

ImageImageImage Lunies on the 2025 Roster !!

Welcome back to Rod B and Remon!

The devils messing with the flight delays and gate changes comic came back to HAUNT me on Monday...had a six hour delay in Tucson, with a last minute gate change! There are worse things, and the folks stuck in Atlanta for day(s) can attest to that. No precision of Swiss trains here...! My delay was totally mechanical, and not software driven. The flight debacles have reminded me of the Southwest Airlines Christmas vacation in the Denver International Airport incident a couple of years ago. There were some subtle jabs at Southwest by other airlines in their commericials...gotta watch for karma!

The devils messing with the flight delays and gate changes

In a previous life I travelled for work. For many years I was away 75% of the month - travel M-F for 3 weeks and home on weekends and 1 week of the month. I accumulated a lot of free flight miles and hotel stays. When I left that job, I vowed to never have to fly again; I’ve been airport free ever since and I don’t miss it. When I see these flight issues on the news I get PTSD.

Opening ceremonies of the Olympics today...and Rowlympics starts in two days!!

Rowlympics
July 27–August 3

The Rowlympic Challenge coincides with the Olympic Games regatta. To take part, you need to complete all eight events. You can do so on either the RowErg, SkiErg or BikeErg, or on-water, but you must complete all the events on the same type of machine. You can do the events in any order as long as you finish by the end of August 03, 2024.

it seems like "Rowlympic Challenge" is going to be only about completing those 8 distances, i.e. no ranking for each event (like with WODs) 😭

Looks to me like several events are "rankable"

The Events
RowErg, SkiErg and on-water / BikeErg
Event #1 1000 meters* / 2000 meters
Event #2 1 minute* / 1 minute*
Event #3 10,000 meters* / 20,000 meters*
Event #4 20 minutes / 20 minutes
Event #5 2000 meters* / 4000 meters*
Event #6 10 minutes / 10 minutes
Event #7 6000 meters* / 10,000 meters*
Event #8 30 minutes* / 30 minutes*

*These events are also rankable. To learn more about ranking a workout see log.concept2.com/help.

yes, but it's not "challenge related", like i can row a ranked 2k whenever i want (i don't 😅), would've preferred if there was a single event each day with a ranked board

Well, that's not really in the spirit of fair competition, now is it? Especially when the Challenge Rules clearly stipulate that all events must be done separately:

- Row, ski or ride each of the eight challenges during the Olympic regatta.
- This is an individual challenge. (You do not need to belong to a team to participate.)
You do not need to sign up. Just enter the events in your logbook.
- Events cannot be combined. All events MUST be done individually as fixed exact distance/time pieces. Workouts cannot be completed as intervals.
- More than one event can be completed on the same day and they can be done in any order.
- You do not need to verify your pieces to appear on the honor board.
RowErg, SkiErg, BikeErg and on-water workouts only.
Note: In order to qualify for the honor board, you need to do all eight events on the same type of machine or on-water. There will be separate honor boards for each machine and on-water. You cannot do, for example, four events on the RowErg and four events on the SkiErg.

Just sayin'...
