Training

Post by [old] Willa » December 16th, 2004, 2:32 pm

Today I sat down and decided that I couldnt be bothered doing another long 20-30 mins session, so I got impatient and had a go at what I had been training for: a 2k test piece.

2 weeks ago I couldn't even finish it in good time because I was getting exhausted, my timing was all wrong. Also I was just pathetic on the ergs. But I had a go today to see where I am at, and I was amazed that after completing it (which did almost kill me!...took 30 mins to recover afterwards) I had a time of:

7:23.0

Now that sounds absolute rubbish, but bare in mind that not only am I quite new to erging, and that my stamina is terrible, I am also only 5ft10 and also barely weigh 10 stone, so I'm hardly strong. I am quite delighted at that time, because I didnt think at this stage I would be able to get it under 7:30 by such a margin. But I'm still a long way from my target of being able to pull 7:30 comfortably.....so more long erg sessions you reckon eh?

hmm ... not exactly a standard piece but hey, why not!

We do 4X16 minute pieces (64 minutes in total) every once and a while. Average was 2:10 on the dot. Could have been lower but we follow specific rates (ie 4'@16, 4'@18, 4'@20, 4'@22). Hopefully this new pb will help in my 6k attempt later this week. Going for under 23:50. Current PB is 24:09.

Finally broke 8500m barrier for 30 min: new PB of 8508, achieved in no small part thanks to an effective music playlist:

Clapton, Layla
Hendrix, All Along The Watchtower
ZZ Top, Sharp-Dressed Man
Clash, Rock the Casbah
Stones, Honky-Tonk Woman
Traffic, Dear Mr Fantasy
Who, Won't Get Fooled Again (finished in the middle of it, right around Daltry's monumental scream)

Ok, ok, it dates me.....

How do you keep at 30 spm for 10k? I can barely do it for 2k. Would I be correct in assuming you train regularly at high rates?

Tom

Hi Tom- 29-32 feels normal to me. It may be my cycling background, which emphasized training at 100-120 rpm so that you can comfortably maintain 80-90 for hours in a race. Also, for what it's worth, I'm almost a lightweight. I do some lower stroke workouts (18-22) but tend towards the 30 spm range........Jon

Okay, it's not a PB (I don't think I am going to be PBing anytime soon), but a significant milestone.
I have now had my C2 model B for 10 years.
For those 10 years I have a mean of slightly over 30 minutes and 7503 m, so a split just under 2:00 min/500 m for every single day.
As an orthodox Jew I am not allowed to erg on the Sabbath of Holidays, so the mean for the days on which I was actually allowed to erg (there were also many days I didn't row for other reasons: vacation, tired, busy, fast days, because, etc.) is over 36 minutes and 9049 m!

Did my annual 10K checkup. Knocked 15 seconds off last years time 35:42 26SPM 1:47/500 pretty consistent. Have been doing alot of long low stroke, high drag work which seems to have helped. Now its time for some speed to get ready for some 2Ks.
