Took me 14 weeks ( tried it in between , but crashed ) ; EIRC is in 5 weeks : no sub 7 there.

I have been erging at L6 and L5 the last months , used higher settings only for PB-attempts for 500m and 1k.

I have ( had ? ) a problem getting the pace under 1:38 for 500m or under 1:45 for 1000m.

The day before yesterday I managed some 50m splits under 1:40 at L5 during my 1000m PB ( av 1:43.9 ) , today I went slower and started the first 200m under 1:42 and let the splits rice slowly after that ( av 1:47.9 ).

So I am afraid my high-damper days are over , just need to get the pace down for a new 500m PB. Don't hold your breath for that.

Impressive, Rick. How is it that you're still getting faster? I'm not, alas, but your result is inspiring.

Tom

How is it that you're still getting faster? I'm not, alas, but your result is inspiring.

Tom

Hard to tell exactly Tom. With me, I think that the main thing has been finding that point on the edge of the envelope in which I'm training as hard as I can without slipping over into overtraining. For the past five months or so I think that I've found it.

Two possible helps have been that 1.) I got slides last Spring and I think that using them may have altered the timing of when I push off. My upper back injuries may be from tugging with my arms too early instead of making the first movement with the legs. The slides seem to be helping me to get a little closer to doing it right. It seems to carry over when I take the erg back off the slides, as I did last night for the 1000m trial. And 2.) I've resisted the urge to train all seven days of the week. As someone who spent 30 years striving to train twice a day every day this is a hard thing to do. But I've taken one complete rest day every week (not even cross-training) this whole cycle and I'm sure that it has made a positive difference. I've trained myself to all-day weariness several times , but the day of complete rest has always brought me back to relative freshness.

Keep searching Tom. Your answers may be different from mine, but they are out there.

BTW I saw Gary a while back and he loves your Model C and thinks that you're a swell guy.

Rick

3 weeks ago i did my first 2K in 7:00:2
Today i tried it for the second time. It resulted in 6:50:5!

I moved from 185th place on the ranking to 111th. In 2,5 month i move to a better age category. I hope to become 40 years old in january so then i'm very young in the "40-49" catogory. With today's time i would be 50th on that ranking.

I rowed my best workout today since I got my erg two weeks ago. I did 5 five-minute pieces as follows:

5 min @ 20 spm for warm up
5 min @ 25 spm working on speed
5 min @ 20 spm focusing on technique
5 min @ 16-17 spm focusing on power
5 min @ 20 spm for warm down

And I feel fabulous! This has been my longest and hardest workout since I got my erg, but I feel energentic and upbeat and I'm not sore like I have been after previous workouts!

Not bad for a beginner, eh?

Been at it 6 months and getting PBs every week at one distance or another.
This week went for my 1000 PB and beat it by 4 seconds - 3:16.1.

Seems on the longer races ( 30 min, 60 min, 10K) my mental toughness that day will determine if I get a PB or not.

Cheers

17:11.2 for 5k tonight, inspired by Bayko

I hadn't really intended to go that fast that far; about a third of the way into the unplanned row I decided to make it a 5k test and see what happened....

For the first time in a while I really had the sense I was moving the chain fairly effortlessly while maintaining form. I've been doing longer rows at what for me are slow SPMs (22-24), and that seems to be helping a lot as far as building endurance. Oddly, it also seems to be helping my speed-- at any rate, I was able to shift gears with about 750 meters to go and finish very strongly at what normally would be an absurd 35-36 SPM....

Here's to a recovery that's actually a conscious, controlled recovery and not just me recoiling back up the slide willy nilly....

It is very hard for an experienced erger like yourself to maintain a score close to PB over the years. An improvement, even by the smallest fraction of time recorded by the equipment - WOW! That should be great encouragement for you to keep up your training.

Cheers,

Paul Flack
