Congrats Doug, that's one sweet 2k time...and with such uncertainty of being able to better last record. Must be feeling good!

Doug,
Congratulations!
That injury makes me cringe in pain just hearing about it.
Great to see that you are back in shape, although I'm sure it was a long 7 months.

Congratulations Doug.

I remember when you posted about your injury initially. I'm happy for you that you've recovered and have improved.

I'm happy to report I rowed a 5k personal best on Friday. I was scheduled to do it on Saturday but because of details of my work schedule and my training schedule, I ended up juggling workouts so that I went for a 5k personal best on Friday - just three days after my 6k personal best.

My previous personal best for 5k was 18:31 which is 253.2 watts. So my strategy was to get to 254 watts as soon as possible and defend that pace to the end. I fell into a 260 watt pace - which is around a 1:50.5/500m pace. I upped the pace in the last 200m and ended at 260.3 w (a 1:50.4/500m pace) and ended at 18:23.8.

My training for the past 3 months has been almost pure long rows, strapless at either two general paces 222 w @ 20 spm (which is relatively high spi work)and 222w @ 26 spm (which works out to 10mps). My 6k and 5k personal bests were at higher paces than any pace I've trained at since February.

The crown jewel of personal bests attempts, i.e. the 2k, is scheduled in about a week for me. My and 5k and 6k pb have each improved by about 7 watts - so it would be nice if my 2k improves by 7 watts also which would put me in the 6:50 ballpark.

We'll see.

Jim Pisano

Congrats on the 2k, Nick -- but can you lay off the 5k for about 3 months? That way I have a glimmer of hope of catching you before the end of the C2 season....

17:13.6 5k tonight after 14 hrs at the University, and about 4 hours' sleep.
True, that still leaves me about 20 seconds behind the good Mr. Rockliff, whose post inspired the piece.

Since my last 500 was in 1:35 and change, it seems likely that a more even pace and some rest aforehand might allow me to chop that interval down. On the other hand, it's at least as likely that NR is ready for a 16:45 or so....

I wish I had your work ethic, Nick....

Not too shabby for a 5K- I just did my best 30 min in quite a while- 8286 meters. I was going for 8300 but just didn't have it in the middle 10 minutes.

120 drag; 30-31 SR JonW

A new test for me today:

2k at 18 spm - 6:48.1, 1:42

That brings all my rate restricted 2ks to:
18 - 6:48.1 (target was 6:48)
20 - 6:48.1 (target 6:42)
22 - 6:42.3 (target 6:36)
24 - 6:35.7 (target 6:30)

If i i can meet all my restricted targets all the way down to 34 spm i should be acheiving a 6:00 2k! Still a little work to do then!
today i decided to test me on my first 5K. I wanted to go easy because tomorrow i leave for Switzerland for the Armada Regatta in Bern. armadacup

It's my first 5K so it's my PB. My time was 19:08:5, that's about 1:55/500m average. It went ok but next time (about 2 weeks) i think it's possible to take 30 seconds off that time.

New PB for 6k today on-line. Went out at my PB pace for 5k. Held steady splits between 2:00.0 and 2:01.1. Past the 5k in 20:04.9 (PB by 4.7). Finished strong but safely with 1:59.7, 1:59.4, 1:58.0 and 1:53:5 to break 24 minutes in 23:56.4 (new pb by 33.7). I guess a week of taking it easy after le tour worked.

Nice row lowwall, almost a fly and die but you found something in the final 500. Very well done for digging deep!

Inspired by Ash's rate restricted 2000 m piece, I rowed one too today:

2000 m: 1:42.0 @ 20 spm

Honestly I was aiming for 1:42.0 @ 18 spm to match Ash, but couldn't hold the rate that low at the given split.
