I find technique suffers if I am distracted on long rows. I maintain interest by trying to keep the projected meters for each segment as constant as possible, or ensuring that they increase slightly (ideally 1M / 15' interval). Knowing my target time, if I rush the first, I know that the rest will be tough so I am encouraged to stick to my target. Initially I would up the distance gradually, "longest row" can also be a useful motivator, but if the intention is to allow better quality on shorter days, you do need to keep the total sensible. Yes there are people who do 2hrs per day, but it isn't for many!
