Feel free to chuckle or say "Ha ha, I told you so!"
:D personally, I like that you were set on a specific course of thinking, but you've been curious enough to reconsider.

I'm now thinking more in terms of matching watts to heart rate.
According to Conconi, when aerobic, our HR Range-in-use is linear with power delivered. So we can use HR if a power measurement is not available. Using both can confirm Conconi's hypothesis.

This is irrelevant to rowing and erging: afloat we see where the puddles go and can guess our rating, and PM shows W and rate.

Problems arise using HR alone: is 200W at rate 20 better or even different to 200W at rate 30? No doubt this is why both O'Neill and Caviston link the two.

Someone else on here was saying that, when they did long steady state, they simply chose a pace that was sufficiently slow to ensure negligible drift even over very extended periods. That sounds like a plan too.
I may not have been the person that you are referring to - but if not that is the metric that I have come to use. It's quite a high bpm in % terms of max, but if it's not drifting then it means things are under control.

Of course, and seen it too. So I use Watts as main control. I know when I've had enough.

If interested in quality, there's no replacing W/Rate, so Pace and/or Watts are needed anyway.

I find technique suffers if I am distracted on long rows. I maintain interest by trying to keep the projected meters for each segment as constant as possible, or ensuring that they increase slightly (ideally 1M / 15' interval). Knowing my target time, if I rush the first, I know that the rest will be tough so I am encouraged to stick to my target. Initially I would up the distance gradually, "longest row" can also be a useful motivator, but if the intention is to allow better quality on shorter days, you do need to keep the total sensible. Yes there are people who do 2hrs per day, but it isn't for many!
