Combine rowing and strength training

Post by Jens » December 15th, 2023, 8:15 am

Hi,

Iam used to run 3x a week and lift weigths 3x a week.
Due to injury I cant run anymore. But i can still lift weigths, and i can row.
My plan is to row three times a week. two times threshold and one time easy.

Do you think this can be done with the easy strength routine made by Dan John? Iam thinking on doing this routine 4x a week, and 3 rows.
And i will combine my easy row with training strength. So it will be 6 days a week of training.

Have any of you tried this strength program? And do you think it is well suited to combine with cardio?

Thank you.

It sounds very manageable to me, especially as you're used to running and lifting. Erging is generally easier to recover from, so you should be fine.

I do an erg piece just about every day and move some dumbbells about twice a week. Only two of the ergs are properly hard sessions. Works for me.

3 typically hard gym sessions combined with 3-4 erg sessions per week. Erg sessions are rarely hard to be able to recover properly.

Absolutely, Dan John is always worth a listen / follow. Haven't ran easy strength myself but I believe it's intended for athletes that focus on other sports.

The usual response you hear for these questions is, it depends on your goals.

If you want to focus on endurance fitness, row more, lift less.

If you want to focus on strength, lift more, row less.

Me? I do both, so I am fairly strong and fairly fit :D
