I dribble 3-in-1 on a paper towel, fold it up a bit, and run the chain through that several times, on all four sides. Then, when I'm done with that, I give the chain a final wipe down with a clean paper towel.

How's that working out for you, Nick? I thought that was the coating on skillets that keep the eggs from sticking. The dry part is intriguing....less chance of soiling the better half's carpets.

Works fine, spray on and let the solvent flash off and all done.

Tbh, maybe I'm doing something wrong but I don't put enough 3 in 1 oil on for it to drip. It's probably about half a teaspoon I put on.
I think you do it right, oiling sparingly is the message.

Another chain lube suggestion (when doing the job solo):

1) Take a jump-stool thing (or a chair) that's a bit higher than the erg seat and put it behind the back end of the erg. If it isn't already there, roll the erg seat all the way to the front of the erg, at the flywheel.

2) Grab the heaviest kettlebell available (I usually use 40 lbs) and put it on the erg seat. Tip it on its side, so the handle of the KB is facing the front of the erg.

3) Take the erg handle, turn it 90* and put it through the KB handle. Rotate the erg handle back to it's normal orientation. Be careful that you don't introduce any twists into the chain.

4) Move the seat all the way to the back of the erg, grab the KB and put it on the stool / chair. The weight of the KB should be enough to prevent the bungee from retracting the handle.

5) Lube the chain using your favorite product and method. As I mentioned above, I put 3-in-1 oil on a folded-up paper towel, and slide that back and forth over the chain.

6) Check the top of the rail and clean it up as required, using your favorite cleaner.

7) Reverse the steps above, and you're done.
