I did not change my technique for sure and I had already used rowers in fitness clubs before along with getting trainer pieces of advice. This doesn't imply I'm a perfect rower though...
It isn't a technique issue. Originally folks thought the problem was the chain rubbing at the chain guide on the top side of the erg, before the chain gets to the sprocket. Issues there are due to technique. Problems on the lower side are due to some sort of interference, either due to the location of the long plastic piece or a part of the pulley / bungee / chain system. The fact that things are fixed once you reassembled it suggests that in doing so you got everything back to where it should be. (or at least where the interference and resulting noise is gone)

Enjoy!

Not sure why it started rubbing after all the years I've had it but the plastic strip was bowed so I flipped it over and no more rubbing.

That's one way to be sure that it never rubs...

It's a way, right! But I guess this mostly protects against dust?

And oil spillage from the chain onto the floor.

Not to mention cat feet... My 2 are fascinated by the flywheel. Glad they can't see the chain!
BTW, the plastic strip slid back into position with no problem. Glad I stumbled across this post!

The white plastic protector is there for when you over oil the chain - done it a couple of times now.
It guides the excess oil down to a low spot so it drips on your $40/sq ft carpet in one spot only.
It's why I keep a piece of hardboard under that part of the rower. :D

I'm sure the real reason is to hide moving parts from inquisitive fingers or claws. Same as the black cover on the front.

Do you guys wipe down the chain after adding lube? That should minimize drips or splatter.

Thanks for that tip, Rich. I checked under mine and, fortunately for me, no tell-tale spot. Just for my piece of mind, I'll put some type of stealth protector under the erg. SWMBO would do some surgery on me I would find highly unpleasant if such a spot were found!

Using some spray oil, so putting a towel below chain and apply only small portions. Then wiping the chain afterwards to get rid of the extend.
As I have a rubber floor, it wouldn't bother me if some oil would splatter on the floor. Rower is placed in the basement exclusively used for workout.

Tbh, maybe I'm doing something wrong but I don't put enough 3 in 1 oil on for it to drip. It's probably about half a teaspoon I put on.

I spray on and then wipe with a cloth. This spreads out the oil over every part of the surface and stops any excess drips - never had any drips on the floor.

What ould do you use? I have to drip oil on a cloth and that always is a mess.
