PM5 Split and Rate Spiking

Post by Rower_Codor » December 5th, 2023, 1:49 am

Hello!

I've been having some rowing machines (Model Cs, PM5) having some spiking problems in both the split/500 and the spm rate. I've tried updating the firmware but the recent it goes up to is v33 for both. I tried getting v36 but my laptop won't let me download it. The fly wheel reader and monitor should still be good. I noticed that if I keep the pressure hard it feels accurate but if I start to slack off to what feels like a 2:30 with power at ease then it starts jumping from like 1:19 to 3:32 for example but the I go back to hard pressure 1:45 for example, and it's fine again. Anyone know what that could be? Trying to get these two fixed for the team I coach and would like them all up and running. Thanks in advance!

Could be a pause in the pull, maybe after legs-hips, when the arms start. This causes PM to see two strokes rather than one.

I have random spm spiking issues surrounding ErgRace. The PM5 firmware dev suggested for me to plug the monitor into the wall, perhaps that might be a course of testing for you? It could be just bad batteries.

That's a 1st Generation PM5 from like 2015.

You could potentially have problems with it that do not effect the later versions. I used to have certain hardware versions of the PM3 that used to "Spike" 3 or 4 times during a 30 minute row when no other versions were affected. Remember the firmware is now different for each version of the PM5.

Could even be a fault in the monitor by now, you wouldn't know unless you swapped yours out with a brand new one.

The most common problems are the TACH pickup cables at the connector. If you have one of the really old single coil pickups, that wants to go in the bin and get the newer twin coil type.

The new part is PN1887 and its like USD$20, I would just buy a new pickup/generator.

Thank you. I know i just replaced the pickup cable for the fly wheel recently and i was more inclined to believe it is the monitor. I did just recently buy a new one to test it out on another machine I had to fix so I'm going to swap those 2 around before my practice today to see if that's it.
