Re: Forum Flyers
I am just wondering whether any fellow FF’s have had experience of carpel tunnel surgery and more specifically, likely recovery time. A round of cortisone injections in both wrists provided some temporary relief a year ago but twenty years of rugby in the front row, is such that surgery is now recommended. Due to go in on 29 November but not really looking forward to a lengthy layoff - possibly two if they do each wrist separately - as the fitness levels right now are pretty good.
My GP, for whom any form of physical exercise seems to have ended when he was in short trousers, of course recommends giving up rowing altogether which I am not about to do.

Gordon no personal experience but I am pretty sure Jack had a brush with it back in the day.mudgeg wrote: ↑October 30th, 2023, 2:33 pmI am just wondering whether any fellow FF’s have had experience of carpel tunnel surgery and more specifically, likely recovery time. if you search the forum there are a lot of references to holding the wrists firm and straight and the like but certainly no comments about stopping - I would talk to a good physiotherapist I guess
best of luck!

Re: Forum Flyers
Carpal tunnel is a pigeonhole term frequently applied by laymen to neural malfunctions which present as pain, numbness and “electrical” shocks in fingers and wrists. I had lousy conductivity in medial and ulnar nerve left arm in 2015 precipitated by sculling injury. Muscle around ring and pinky fingers atrophying, knuckles and finger joints moving out of position.
What matters is the location where the surgeon makes the incision. Mine went in at the elbow to release the ulnar nerve. Fixed the problem, finger function and strength returned in 4-5 wks. No pain that made opioids necessary. But not properly speaking carpal tunnel surgery so can’t help you there Gordo.
Recently had two rounds of cortisone and finally (after faffing around for six months with no improvement) a release procedure for trigger finger lockup middle and ring on right hand. That is two endoscopic incisions in the hand, one for each finger. Not much pain, no use restrictions after nine days.
My experience both times was pretty much an in and out burger once the ortho got off his ass and did the deed. You want to know more about the threat of sarcopenia and fitness loss, Lindsay’s double TKR makes him the expert.

Thanks Lindsay and Jack much appreciated. I haven’t got it as severe as Jack by any means, I have no problems during the day or when rowing. It gets me at night after about 4/5 hours sleep when my hands go numb which wakes me up. I guess I’ll just play it by ear - there will obviously be a fine balance between ensuring it has healed and getting back on the horse. Lindsay’s recovery from knee surgery which I saw on this thread was pretty impressive.

Re: Forum Flyers
terry and I had a good go at 10k tonight.
my first for 4-5 years so went carefully so I could finish and pretty pleased.
did 10k @2:08 = 42:44.4 flat pacing last @2:07.6. Managed to see MHR170 which is very close to 100%
Terry was 42:29.3 without going too hard.
We will probably have another try later in the month.

Maybe, .Just as a time trial. It is being mixed in with massive weekend event for cross fit nuts.Yankeerunner wrote: ↑October 16th, 2023, 7:42 pmThinking ahead, is anyone planning to do BRIC on December 9th?
More likely is WIRC in Prague in Feb. 15 weeks out, sounds like a really silly thing to do, good thing is the 2k is on Friday, so a good weekend exploring after.

Re: Forum Flyers
I'd been hoping to do both of them, but the cost of going it alone is more than I'd like to spend. I put out some feelers about sharing the expenses of a hotel, transportation to and from the airport & to and from the venue, but haven't had any takers. Might be doing all my racing in the Northeast USA this winter.meerkats wrote: ↑November 14th, 2023, 2:44 amMaybe, .Just as a time trial. Re: Forum Flyers
Anyone else out there willing to give a try for 10 k for the November CTC? We are just two entries short of floating a fourth boat - any gender, any weight class will do. If you are thinking of doing the C2 100 k Holiday Challenge, it will be a good way to start and put you 10% of the way there.

Re: Forum Flyers
Thought that I'd knock out the CTC this morning to get Boat1 off the dock, then discovered after entering it that two others beat me to it. Steve and I have started to fill Boat2 though, and I've got it out of the way.
I approached it as an Anaerobic Threshold workout, aiming for a 2:06 pace. Turned out that it was too ambitious on the first piece, deteriorating to a lot of 2:09s in the last 1200m. But was pleased that the 5-minute rest was enough recovery to hit the 2:06 target in the second piece. Probably won't try it again. Can't say that I liked it enough to put it on a favorites list.

Re: Forum Flyers
i agree Rick it's not much fun to go hard but quite a good session to get anerobic and probably good for 2k.
Terry and i had a good go at it tonight (my second) and improved a bit. Got fairly close to MHR - 165 (170) Did @2:02/2:01.7.
Terry was @2:03
unlikely to do again though!
