Ergdata PM5 Update slow

Post by gvcormac » November 4th, 2023, 11:55 am

For the first time, I used the Ergdata app instead of the C2 Utility to update my PM5. It took 30 mins.!

In a sense it is very convenient, if you can spare your phone and your erg for that long.

Ergdata obligingly tells you that updates are available, and lets you click to start.

Only then does it forecast that it'll take 25 minutes to copy the update to the PM5. And after that the PM5 needs to update itself, which takes another few minutes.

The C2 Utility took a small fraction of this time -- only a few minutes overall.

I'll probably continue to use Ergdata for this, but I'll remember to not to do it when I'm about to get on the erg or do something that requires my phone.

Good info.
I was in contact with Elizabeth as she tried to update her PM5 with the app as well, but it was not working, took tremendous amount of time (several hours), then quit and used cable.
Transfer with BT takes its time, so it is clear it will take longer than cable based variant, where data transfer is multiple times faster.
The update of the PM5 itself will take the same time in both variants.

As my laptop is very old and needs 15mins to boot before it's able to be used, I will probably go for a try with ergdata before I use cable and see if it works.

The C2 utility works so well, not sure why I would go to BT transfer through ErgData. I suppose some circumstances could make it a necessary option, but not ideal.

As I wrote. My PC is 13 years old and not in use anymore at all.
Literally all data based stuff I do, I use my smartphone.

I would prefer to have a cable based option for the update through ergdata (or any other specific app on the smartphone for that reason) using an OTG adapter. That would be perfect.

Putting the updates on a USB via the C2 utility program is simple and straightforward. I used my USB to update my pm5 and over the course of the next week will use the same one to update 7 other ergs. It’s simple & straightforward.
See if any of your rowing acquaintances have the next update on USB, borrow it and in minutes you’ll be updated next time.

Yess was ready for a long row and pushed the button to update. Minor frustration compared to using thumb drive..Did some planks and KB swings. Thank you C2 staff for your efforts and the best experience (including free updates) for this Model C rower with 20 years use of a brilliant and sturdy device.

I used it accidentally last time - I saw an update icon and pressed it and it fired off the update via BT on the phone.

Certainly took longer than via the cable on the pc/laptop, but it did mean I didn't need to unhook the laptop from the eGPU (which requires a set of restarts to be reconnected as there are some aspects of the thunderbolt protocol that don't play nicely with being unplugged.)

In future I think I'll just use the laptop though, as it did tie up the phone for a while, or at least plan it better!

Using a linux-based PC means phone update is easier and more convenient for me. The feature has worked flawlessly and is much appreciated.

I understand others may be in a different situation where network cable or USB is preferable. I just love having more options available.

If I recall correctly, the PM5 won't update from ErgData if its battery is low (mine is currently at 41%). Just for info.
