Antibacterial cleaner on metal parts

Post by hikeplusrow » October 10th, 2023, 2:32 pm

I've had my RowErg from new for about 18 months. I've noticed that the coating on the rear leg of the machine which connects the rail to the foot is starting to bubble and peel off. The structural integrity of the machine has not been compromised in any way. I do occasionally clean the sweat off this area with antibacterial/citrus antibacterial cleaner. Could this be causing the degradation? On a positive note, it looks as though the rear leg is a separate entity and can be replaced if circumstances dictate.

I would never use citric containing cleaner for coated elements. Could clearly be the reason, as my rower is the same age and shows no such degradation. I only wipe the rail with a dry towel before and after rowing.

Yes, thanks for that. I have ceased using any kind of antibacterial cleaner on metal parts. I should also point out that I have never used such a cleaner on the rail - I use a non-acidic glass cleaner as recommended by C2.

I think on stainless steel it's not a real problem, but coated stuff is more prone to degradation by citric stuff.
If you use a pump bottle, it's likely to apply the stuff on the coating as well, so I won't use it on either part.

Yes, I always used to apply it directly to a cloth.
