Got a new 2k-PB with 8:44.3 on wednesday:

Time Meters Pace Watts Cal/Hr S/M
8:44.3 2,000m 2:11.0 155 834 24 182
2:11.0 500m 2:11.0 156 835 25 177
2:11.1 1,000m 2:11.1 155 834 24 183
2:11.1 1,500m 2:11.1 155 834 24 185
2:11.2 2,000m 2:11.2 155 833 25 186

I did a 2k TT as I want to follow a 5k-training-plan which is based on 2k pace. I wasn't feeling very good starting whith a high HR but wanted this getting done. Well a few hours later I knew why I wasn't feeling good. I had kind of a gastrointesinal issue
Anyway, new PB is a new PB and now I'm the exact 50th percentile this season :D
Very long term goal would be to go sub 8. Is this realistic? I did the 4 min at Junes CTC in 998 at a 2:00.2 pace.

Keep training hard and you'll see your 2k times come tumbling down. Sure you can do it.

Well done, and a 2k PB when you're not feeling good is a great achievement.

I think that sub 8 could be achievable, but it won't be easy.

19:49.4!!!!

Took 4 days off, double dosed on the inhaler before starting, full stretches, empty stomach, litre of water, and held it at just under 2:00. Felt good after 2,500 m so pushed pace to 1:58, then finally 1:53 for the last 500 m or so.

I'm absolutely over the moon!

Wow, I thought sub 20 was possible, but this is a significant amount under. Great session

My favourite session yet, unsurprisingly!

I may go back to the asthma nurse, in fact. I've been using a 'preventer' (which you use every day regardless, designed to keep symptoms under control proactively), but today took a few puffs of the 'rescue' (to be used during an attack or flare-up as a way of 'escaping' it) prior to starting and my lungs didn't burn at all - nada.

I'm now wondering if I'm still doing all this with one hand tied behind my back, albeit not as bad as before...

Not to spoil the excitement, but aren't some asthma-related drugs prohibited in competitions ?
Thought I heard some debate a while a go (can't even remember what sport it was).

I'd never heard of that, but they are indeed regulated as a performance enhancing drug!

Good news, however - inhaled salbutamol (what I take), has been agreed as acceptable in competitive sports (as per the World Anti-Doping Code) up to a maximum dose of 1,600 micrograms of metered doses per day. I get through between 400-600 micrograms depending on the day.

Although my breathing has been better, my lungs still burn for the first 5-10 minutes of strenuous exercise. Didn't have any of that today by taking the inhaler!

Sounds like Ventolin, no ?

At any rate, now you have to improve all you PB proportionally :)

It is! That's the brand name for salbutamol :)

Yeah, I will get round to it, but I'm still not sure if it was just a co-incidence, although as I've picked up the pace these past few months, I've found myself becoming ever increasingly limited by breathing itself, rather than the VO2 max thing.

It'll be interesting to see, I'll report back in a while with any findings!

One thing I noticed (maybe it will be the same for you, as we have similar ages, bodies and levels, if I recall correctly): some progress seems to come by simply increasing the time you spend on the rower (the Km you do per week), more than increasing the intensity of the hard interval sessions.

I'm almost convinced to try a marathon-style training program that has a lot of Km/week, but everything pretty slow (nothing faster than your 5K PB pace !). According to the author, this is aimed at improving your long distance performance (FM/HM/10K), but should also makes you better on short stuff like the 2K.

Embarrassingly, I'm a bit younger, taller and heavier than you! But your numbers suggest that we're fairly similarly matched in absolute output (although you definitely have the edge on endurance) and, like yourself, I'm eager to learn as much as I can about what drives progress on the rower. I'm following the BPP, and I don't think it's a coincidence that he mentions (many times) that the solid state work is the backbone of the training program - words that I think are pretty much verbatim iirc.

As everyone's probably bored of hearing, the sub 20 minute 5k was my initial aim, and I think that (as well as my inherent nature of pushing myself) made me sacrifice some of my SSs by turning them into TTs. Now I've done it, I'm really going to try and settle into the ride on the distance work and leave the 'emptying the tank' stuff for the intervals.

Just gotta ignore the little voice shouting "Next stop, 40 minute 10k" now

Always remind yourself, you need to do what you should, not what you could.

But if I recall correctly, your progress has been far quicker than mine.

P.S.
I'm eyeing the sub-40' 10K too, but the sub-7' 2K is still very far for me. I'm downgrading it form "goal" to "aspirational goal"
