these are all great points.
mat - I am on carpet in a rental apt, so while I doubt the feet will cause any damage or move, I considered getting one
HRM - I have eliminated Garmin due to multiple reviews that its BT connection isn't reliable, also the Garmin Connect app doesn't seem to be as well liked as Polar's. I will be using without their $500 watches.
phone stand - C2 sells theirs for $1. I have no idea why no one has mentioned this and I've watched a lot of videos/reviews, they all recommend some $20 phone holder.
can you run both ergzone, ergdata at same time? or any other app which also syncs to the PM5? I'm guessing they all connect to PM5 directly, is there a connection limit or is it like a pc with multiple connections?
the whole tracking thing and now with added HR tracking is new to me and very tempting.
this will be setup in my living room which is the only place it can go. I have a floor fan.
- The mat in your case seems optional but you likely will be sweating a fair amount and having the mat might help keep the carpet cleaner.
- I have a Garmin Fenix watch that I wear daily (have for years); I also have a Garmin HRM which I have had for years that I used when running was more of a focus. I have personally never had an issue with it pairing via BT. I am not familiar with the Polar ecosystem but the Garmin one has been sufficient for me thus far.
- I have the cheap phone holder from C2; I also have the iPhone 13 mini so a smaller phone than a lot of people. The way my phone sits in the cheap phone holder, I am not confident the larger phones with a case would fit well but I could also be very wrong on that.
- I've never tried to connect more than one app at a time to the PM5. All of my stuff I am doing is in ErgZone as that was the first app I downloaded to use with the C2. From all I have read and heard, ErgData is more complete with a lot more data and options. ErgZone has been sufficient for what I am looking for at this point but I could see ErgData providing benefit through other metrics and feedback. I would make one general recommendation with data and tracking though - don't overly stress about data until you really start to enjoy the rower. Get on the machine consistently, put in some work, and as you begin to enjoy it more, then start digging more into the data. I think too many people get obsessed with data without enjoying the process. I prefer to prioritize enjoying the process and using the data to better understand how it can be more enjoyable (better performance, better recovery, etc.).
- I have a floor fan in my non-climate controlled garage in Las Vegas. Summers can be brutally hot and winters can actually get quite cold at the time. During the summer, the floor fan is quite sufficient for me. The one thing with fans is that a lot of people set them up to blow on their face - I did initially as well and while it felt like it was giving relief, once I moved it to be behind me blowing on my back, I found it being behind me actually gave me a better cooling effect.
