New 4:00 PB at 1282M!

So, I did the 4:00 for the CTC challenge and got a PB. This was an expected PB as I haven't tested the 4:00 since 2018 when I was still in somewhat "newbie" stage. Looking at my other PBs I should be able to do even more but it's nice to have a PB as I haven't had but like 2 in the last few years. My plan was do do the first 2:00 at 1:33/1:34 and I averaged 1:33.3. Then I hoped to hang at 1:35 and close strong. Well I did hang at 1:35 and then went faster once I hit 1K but started fading in the end but averaged 1:33.8 - so overall was 1:33.6 at 35 SPM. This does put me on top of the rankings for the 55-59 age group, so that's cool.
Wow! 💪
Was curious about your result - this is far far away from my capabilities!
Well done!
Thanks! Had I done the 4:00 TT back when I was doing 2:57 1Ks I would have done better and prob got the 1300 barrier but not quite in that form these days. Happy still with results - this length of row still seems to suit me better.

Managed a 5k PB today. Went from 18:50.1 to 18:45.9 in 6 weeks. Pretty pleased with that. This was definitely flat out!

Andy
That's a great improvement in six weeks. Well done

I saw your result on the CTC page and I was wondering if this was a PB. Very impressive pace, and I'm really happy for you especially given your recent patchy performance.

Thanks Stu. I think my performance is still patchy which is why I delayed this test as I wanted to try on a day I felt decent. I did a pretty good job just staying on pace and suffering thru. I did some interval work at desired pace leading up and that helped. Gone are the days of randomly doing a PB or close to PB on something short and then the next week for something longer. To do decent at a test I really need to prepare specifically for it.

I think I'm having an issue of not warming up properly. As you know, I never used to warm up at all, now I just do a 4k steady pace, but I think I do need to actually push the pace a lot more.

Hopefully we'll both find a solution to our new normal. I guess age might be a factor for both of us too? There's no telling how it's going to affect us at different ages.

I hate to admit it but I really believe age is a factor more than I thought. I blamed a lot of my "slow down" on COVID and the clot issues but that really wouldn't impact my strength with weights and they have declined as well. I mean not drastic and I am still strong, especially for my age but things I could handle fairly easily before (just 2 years ago) I now struggle with.

Ageing is such an arbitrary path, and who knows if Covid has just hastened the impact. It is notable, imo, that both of us were far better two years ago, as our paths seem to have tracked a similar trajectory. Age will play a role, but I'm five years younger than you, so surely it can't be just that?

I think both of you will be on the age related decline. I was at my peak at 48 but didn't start training until I was 44 and was always on an upward trend. Had I not suffered an illness during 49-50 I think I would have still improved maybe another 2 years but with smaller gains. My peak in my 50s was when I was 54 but much slower than when I was 48.

As I moved into my 60s I reacted better to more UT1 type sessions than UT2. As I move closer to my 70s now I'm still trying to find what works best. I tell you when I find out

Hahaha.

Yeah, it probably is and as Keith said, in also slightly in denial. I'm improving again, but it's slow going and very patchy.

Decided to try a 500m TT with a fly and die approach after Keith's suggestion that this can work for the 500.
I've been pacing these previously. Result was massive PB. I certainly died at the end but I definitely flew for the first 250. Previous best 1:43.7

Congratulations. You might even be able to shave a bit more if you settle in at 1:38/9, ideally you should only start to slow in the last 100. I note that your rating dropped. You may find that you can reduce the slowing by short sliding when the legs won't move as quickly, bad form, but compensating with the upper body does reduce the impact of the legs dying, however it will only work for a short while so you need to eke out your legs a bit further first!

Thanks for the tips Iain. I think some slowing towards the end was inevitable as I've never tried this fly and die approach before or rowed at 1:36 pace either!. Still it was an eye opener to what is possible. After such a big PB I don't think I'll try another for a while although 1:38 looks possible at some point
