You know what, I think I do feather it on the erg! I never gave that any thought at all, it's just what came naturally. Which is really silly considering I don't row on water and haven't been in a real boat since 1980 or something.

I'll have to pay attention and try to just pull without turning the handle. Duh.

Carla

You might try rubbing a few drops of olive or similar oil into your hands. Then do the same with water, diluting the oil, dry your hands, and row. This leaves a light layer of oil on your skin and helps to prevent blisters.

Cotton, terry cloth etc, holds water and would cause the skin to peel right off your hands. Almost anything would be better than cotton.

Nylon is friction free, non absorbant, and excellent. I used to have the wood handle wrapped with nylon socks, which gave me an excellent grip and no blisters.

Now I use head control tennis wrap tape. This works similar to the nylon but is more uniform. I tried another brand that caused blisters.

It's hard to beat socks.

Since you probably don't want to wrap the handle, using oil and avoiding cotton would probably work best.

Could I ask for advice about a related topic? I have been rowing since last September on a Model C (old-style handle). Recently I have had sore hands -- at night I occasionally notice a burning feeling at the base of my left thumb, especially, but the same area on the right hand is sensitive, too. Arthritis, I bet. I wondered if the handle of my rower might be contributing. Does anyone believe I would be more comfortable with the new handle?

Every day I either row (30 mins.) or bicycle (75 mi. yesterday), so I'm giving my hands a good work out. Also, I'm now 60 yrs. old. Maybe I just have to expect this. But I'd be glad to spend $15.00 if more experienced people think it would help.

Thanks,
Dennis

Keeping your thumbs relaxed and on top should provide an easy solution for you.
