I don't change the drag factor for anything more than 500m and I set quite a few PBs at 115. I'd only change it if you prefer it at a different number for everything that you do as there's no magic formula.

You could think using English language at work most of the time would help much, but it does not really help, as you talk about completely different thingsaegis wrote: ↑June 16th, 2023, 4:08 pmPassing out means to faint to english. I understand the pain of learning foreign languages and expressions. I'm still having a hard time with French after six years in Switzerland. Doesn't help that work is mostly in english.Sakly wrote: ↑June 16th, 2023, 12:32 pmThe problems of non-native speakers
I looked up "passing out" and it translates to really be knocked off and losing any sense, so you would fall of the erg.
This wasn't the case for me, I was really past the edge of my capabilities, breathing so hard, that my lungs were burning like hell, legs burning and jelly and could not go through it, had to stop. This was about 3-400m to go or so and I was 10s ahead my PB, so I decided to get back after some seconds and get at least a tiny new PB- I could squeeze 2s or so...
So there is only very limited transfer to stuff which we are talking about in this forum

For short distances I typically increase DF to around 140-150, depending on the day. With higher DF I can get better results in short distances, as I lack explosiveness, so I can compensate with strength.
For longer distances this doesn't work at all, as the average stroke power is typically lower and you are working below your max capabilities.

Re: New Personal Best! Brag About That New Pb!
Thanks all. I did a 5k recently and was on my target pace but HD with less than 400m to go. I think my spm was too high for me to maintain and I was wondering if i should try to keep my spm down and have a slightly higher df.
I now feel I'm just overthinking it and should just start a little slower. If i feel good at 3k then maybe pick it up a notch.

Re: New Personal Best! Brag About That New Pb!
I rowed 5ks with 34spm as well as with 27spm, DF 5 points difference (without intention, I always use a ca. - setting). But I never felt good at the 3k-mark. If you feel this way, it is probably showing, that you were not pushing hard enough for the first 3kaegis wrote: ↑June 17th, 2023, 4:41 pmThanks all. Yes 5ks sucks wayyyy more than a 2k simply because of how much longer it feels.
i havent tried a 10k pb yet actually even though i do about 3 > one hour rows weekly.

Re: New Personal Best! Brag About That New Pb!
A TT of a longer distance is completely another world compared to a steady long row
I need also to update my 10k PB as it is the oldest one from 1k upwards. And I already know it will feel very uncomfortable!

Yes for sure! I've been spending more time working on 30r20s, and 1.5/2k intervals. They will definitely help me in getting more comfortable with being uncomfortable.
Re: New Personal Best! Brag About That New Pb!
For me it's not like that. All my PBs (1', 500m, 1K, 2K, 5K, 10K and HM) are pretty consistent overall (e.g. last season they were all 76-79% percentile for gender, LWT, any age) but I find the 2K more challenging than any other.

Mamaged to get a new pb for 5k improving previous time by 12s. Totally got wiped out in last km barely hanging on by a thread telling myself i can finish it keeping fighting the thoughts of the last HD attempt. Lots of work to do be done to sustain longer sessions above lactate threshold.

Very gritty last couple splits! Sucks fighting the power loss. But you stayed stuck in mentally. Big PB!

Well done on hanging on for a fantastic PB. Not that you will want to do this again for some time, but your would almost certainly have been a bit quicker if you had backed off the initial pace much earlier (say after 5 strokes), saving the <2:03 until the final quarter.aegis wrote: ↑June 18th, 2023, 6:55 amMamaged to get a new pb for 5k improving previous time by 12s.
