He is an excellent coach and has brought us a long way. He retired as an oarsman late in his twenties. He rowed in Brockville, Ontario all of his junior career. He won schoolboys and henley multiple times... those are excellent regattas. He coached in the states for many universities as part-time job, he is an engineer.<br /><br />Since the fall we have been focusing on getting better as a crew. this is the second season he worked with us and we have been working on slide consistancy, and no pauses at the catch and a better ratio. <br /><br />Honestly, i must admit, this is a crappy ass video of me. i put it on for experimental sake, i was warming up and frankly didnt care about technical rowing... I also didnt know i was filmed.<br /><br />The issues he is working on me personnally is trying to get more compression without leaving the footstops with the heels as little as possible... On the erg the benefit is less than on the water... but let's not forget we arn't training to be good ergers... we want speed in the water. So in a nutshell, he is trying to get me more flexible.... <br /><br />This week we are going to film another practice with many more of us... i can post them if you'd like.

With only a few exceptions, don't row any different on the erg than on the water, escpecially on the drive. Its called "building good habits". The only thing that has to be different is in your hands with a different size grip, no worry about water/blade response, and you have no stroke oar to watch for correct timing. But try to imagine each, even on the C2.<br /><br /> If you can be conscious of your own technique, then whenever a coach can be heard, you can consider if his comments also apply to you and your boat.<br /><br />

You have to make sure that your hands are equidistant from the center of the handle. I do notice that you do not keep your arms straight during the leg drive. When this is the case you limit your leg drive to what the arms can pull. The arms are far inferior in power than the legs. I notice that you use the back simultanously with the draw of the arms. Canadians tend to do that, especially women. My rowing stroke is more contrasted, leg drive arms stay straight. The connection between the straight arms and the final phase of the leg drive is the opening of the back swing. From the limited view I have of your rowing, make sure that you sit on the first half of the seat on your hip bones also called "sitting bones". You are immediately going to feel that you are sitting up more and taller. When using a mirror directly infront of you make sure that your head does not change elevation even though you are swining the upper body. When you pose at the finish check that your forearms are parallel to the ground and that your wrists and back of hand are in line with the ground and forearms. The handle is set against the sternum right below the chest line. The top of the shoulders are as far away from your ear lobes as possible. This enable the lat muscles to contract and the elbows to move the hand back. If your elbows point down to the ground at the finish you are using the biceps and the forearms instead of the lat muscles.<br />I hope this description is of advantage to you.<br />All the best,<br />XENO

Xeno's training DVD's demonstrate those points very nicely. See the link in his signature. Everybody, including me, who gets them says how good they are and how much fun they are. Xeno uses slides but you can use the DVD's without slides, with an obvious adjustment in one place.<br /><br />Byron
