thank you everybody (and thank you Keith for not entering a time that would have pushed me down a spot. Did you see the results...someone in the 50s pulled a 2.49!)

sadly I think my family issues will be here for a while - my wife has developed some serious mental health problems over the past few years that are worsening. She's being treated (full time at the moment) and we have to hope this will help, but I think it'll be a long haul.

to be honest, that makes regular training and being healthy more important for me too and I intend to keep training. But..whether I'll be able to push hard or care enough to do so remains to be seen.

either way, thank you for the support and I'll hope to come in here again more often

Best wishes. Hopefully you are able to take care of yourself as well during hard times. Hopefully the training and positive achievements help. Im a huge believer in exercise helping during trying times.

Makes me sad to read this. My wife also had some serious health issues that caused mental health problems, so I probably can understand a little bit how you feel. But she was never treated full time and she/we could handle it and kind of sort it out, so that is completely another story.
I wish you the best, both of you!

Yeah, I saw the 2:49.1 - that will be a new WR edging out Andy Benko. Then a few others did crazy good times too. I didn't do the 1K as I am still off my game a bit since my health issues but I am getting closer to form.
The family issues sound hard to deal with and it's understandable that is the top priority. Exercise can be a good stress release but to your point how involved you are with it a whole different thing.

I've been a bit scared of my back & decided I needed to "get over myself" and properly put it to the test or I'd keep using it as an excuse, I figured I'd put in 5k and see how I went; apparently for 2k rather well....

previous attempt was 22:40.2 (2:16.0@27 end of November)

Code: Select all

Time	Meters	Pace	Watts	Cal/Hr	S/M	Hr
21:55.6	5,000m	2:11.5	154	829	28	175
4:20.4	1,000m	2:10.2	159	845	28	163
4:21.2	1,000m	2:10.6	157	840	29	173
4:24.9	1,000m	2:12.4	151	818	29	178
4:26.6	1,000m	2:13.3	148	808	29	179
4:22.6	1,000m	2:11.3	155	832	29	186
Obviously went out a too fast, but managed to hold on, just... was going at 2:02@30 right at the death to squeeze under 22mins

My slowest 1k was faster than my fastest one previously though, even with poor pacing; my HR was lower across all but my 1st split too - another sign of progress.

OUTSTANDING - what a brilliant row. Congratulations. I hope your body recovered ok?
Thanks a lot. No injuries, but the last two days I was very tired and could only do slow rowing while watching TV. Today was the first day when I felt a bit fresher and could do a normal steady state row.

Well done with your new PB, too. It is nice if a change in type of training can lead to new PBs. Sorry to hear about your wife’s situation.

This is a very sobering post and makes you appreciate how important health and happiness is. I'm lucky to have never suffered, or had anyone close to me suffer from mental health issues, apart from my Mum with well hidden depression, but I imagine that this is very tough to handle as there's very little you can do to influence it.

All the best to you and yours, and I hope you all can find a way of managing it as best as you all can.

As I recently improved my 5K PB, I felt obliged to give a go also to the 10K: 35s improvement. Not huge, but improvement.

Code: Select all

Time Meters Pace Watts Cal/Hr S/M HR
40:53.6 10,000m 2:02.6 190 952 22 171
 4:03.5 1,000m 2:01.7 194 967 22 158
 4:04.5 1,000m 2:02.2 192 959 21 164
 4:04.1 1,000m 2:02.0 193 962 22 168
 4:04.6 1,000m 2:02.3 191 958 22 170
 4:05.1 1,000m 2:02.5 190 954 22 172
 4:06.3 1,000m 2:03.1 187 944 23 173
 4:06.9 1,000m 2:03.4 186 940 23 173
 4:06.4 1,000m 2:03.2 187 944 24 176
 4:07.1 1,000m 2:03.5 186 938 24 176
 4:05.0 1,000m 2:02.5 190 955 23 182
P.S.
I'm doing a 5 weeks cycle (4 sessions/week) with some sort of 2K training plan that is a mix of what RowAlong suggests (here) and some stuff discussed on this forum (what Tony Cook said in this discussion). In a nutshell: 1 hard session (I like the 4x 1000m+5rest @2KRP+1s), 1 mid session (I like the 4x 2000m+7rest @2KRP+9s) and 2 steady sessions (usually 1 HM and 1 1h or maybe a 5K/10K TT), interleaved as mid / steady / hard / steady. I like I can take my previous week as reference and just try to improve on it progressively. The result of the hard session also tells me what i can expect for the 2K TT at the end of the cycle.
