I don't do 2K trials often (last 2 are aug & oct 2022) but decided to give a try to RowAlong 2K plan (here), mostly because it's shorter than the Viking's plan (4 vs 8 weeks) and I can't seem to find 8 weeks in which vacations or work-related trips don't take me away from the rower.

Bottom line: I took 10s off my previous 7:36 best. It wasn't pretty (I went like 1:48.6 / 1:51.8 / 1:53.4 / 1:53.0 in each 500m split) but I'll take it :) I did it at SR30, should probably aim for 28.

Side note: not sue how much the RowAlong plan contributed (did it with 4 sessions per week). I have to say that only a few sessions felt challenging (the pace is your 2K current PB +something), all the others felt way too easy. Next cycle I'll try something more classical (like the 8x500m 3min rest @ 2KRP) for the hard sessions.

my long term goal is sub 7:00. This will be an uphill battle against my size and age.
I'm (sort of) on the same ... hmm ... boat :)

Goal is sub-7min, but I'm not built for rowing and turning 50yo in 8 months. Let's call it a challenge :)
Good work! Yes, the pacing wasn't ideal but no you know. Don't worry too much about age and it impacting your goals. I set all my PBs after turning 50 as I didn't get into rowing until late 40s - I am now sort of hitting that wall of no longer improving but you got years of improvements ahead of you. I love the 7:00 goals I am seeing.
Seeing you and others here attesting to continuous progress until the 50s is great. Looking forward to <7:00.

Great score! The pacing wasn't optimal yet or you just need to improve fitness to hold the split. This gives you the target for next trial - maybe shoot to go sub 7:30 or hold a 1:52 split for a 7:28. You can give it some time and do some good training before testing again too.
Thanks! Both are things I need to improve. I planned to row at 1:52 split but couldn't hold it back in the first 500m. I need to learn how to relax a little. Fitness is an ongoing project and the main reason I started rowing. As you suggested, I now have a good baseline and won't do another 2k until a couple of months later. I realized that the 2k test is disruptive to my regular training schedule.

Well done. Training your mind to accept the discomfort and just trusting that it will eventually improve, or at least stay very similar, is essential for any TT, but especially the 2k.

Imo, try and increase the stroke rate, but don't focus us on it too much, as it may become counter-productive. My comfort zone is r28-30 (my HM PB was done at a very steady r28), but edging into r32+ is a tipping point for me
Yes, finishing up a 2k TT gives a certain kind of satisfaction akin to finishing other unpleasant yet important projects. I think the 2k experience is transferable to other areas of life in general.

Good to hear different opinions about rating. As I just started rowing, I will explore different styles to determine the sweet spot for me.

I don’t generally post here but today I rowed a half marathon, something I normally do once a year for the May challenge. It’s going to be difficult to fit this in this year so, as my husband is working his way towards rowing a marathon, I joined him and managed to complete it faster than I have managed before in 1:49:26.6. Not the greatest time ever but it puts me above 50% in the rankings for my age, weight and sex for the first time and coming two days after I made it to 4m metres has cheered my week up no end.

Congratulations!! "Not the greatest time ever" isn't relevant, as it's a PB, and just consider how many other 64 year old women in the world would even consider exercise, nevermind rowing, and rowing a HM too!! Imo, this is a massive achievement.
