Congrats - still a big chunk of time off given the distance!

I'm sure you're going to sneak up those extra couple percentiles next time!
Thx, hope you are right 😄

New HM PB, but not by intention 😅

Wanted to go for a long row today and decided to program a HM instead of just row. Started already fast as I felt good and targeted around 2:00 splits @r20.
After some minutes felt to go harder and settled in to old HM PB pace and went slightly below during the row. The old PB is nearly exact one year ago.

Code: Select all

Time Meters	Pace	Watts	Cal/Hr	S/M	HR
1:21:34.4	21,097m	1:55.9	224	1071	20	155
7:56.6 2,000m	1:59.1	207	1012	20	136
7:47.1 2,000m	1:56.7	220	1056	20	148
7:43.0 2,000m	1:55.7	226	1076	20	152
7:43.9 2,000m	1:55.9	224	1072	20	156
7:44.3 2,000m	1:56.0	224	1070	20	155
7:42.4 2,000m	1:55.6	227	1079	20	157
7:41.4 2,000m	1:55.3	228	1084	21	159
7:41.7 2,000m	1:55.4	228	1083	20	161
7:43.9 2,000m	1:55.9	224	1072	20	158
7:43.9 2,000m	1:55.9	224	1072	20	161
4:06.2 1,097m	1:52.2	248	1152	22	165
No big PB in terms of time, ~25s faster, but when I think about how I feel after the row, it is so much of a difference to last year. Today I feel like a bit harder steady state effort, now, 30min later, I am totally relaxed, feeling fine and can write this post during my meal. Additionally I rowed this HM after a hard 6x2k intervals day.
So the result is more of a difference than it looks like 😊
Congrats on this and the new 1km PB....continuing to go from strength to strength

I did my second 2k trial today. It was an improvement from my last trial two weeks ago, from 7:41.5 to 7:33.5. The improvement was primarily psychological, because I pushed myself harder this time. Looking at the splits, I probably pushed too much at the beginning, as I couldn’t hold the pace after the first 500m. Besides bad pacing, I also felt soft today. My kid is coughing and sneezing since Thursday. Although I am not, my throat is dry since last night. I did the trial anyway so I have a baseline score before my impending blood donation in a week or so, which is expected to affect the 2k score.my long term goal is sub 7:00. This will be an uphill battle against my size and age.

My next training focus will be to increase stroke rates.

Big improvement in such a short time - especially as it wasnt just due to improved pacing (!) - well done.

Sub 7 will indeed be an uphill battle ... but there's no downside with your age, you can keep improving into your 50s - at least that's what I did, 2k PB set at age 54, started on the erg at 40.

Nice one 👌

And I bet the next go will be an improvement as well, when you even your pace and do not start to fast.

Thanks! I planned to start at the 1:52 pace, but couldn’t hold it back for whatever reasons. By 1000m, I started to fatigue. Next time will try to even the pace out.

I don't do 2K trials often (last 2 are aug & oct 2022) but decided to give a try to RowAlong 2K plan (here), mostly because it's shorter than the Viking's plan (4 vs 8 weeks) and I can't seem to find 8 weeks in which vacations or work-related trips don't take me away from the rower.

Bottom line: I took 10s off my previous 7:36 best. It wasn't pretty (I went like 1:48.6 / 1:51.8 / 1:53.4 / 1:53.0 in each 500m split) but I'll take it :) I did it at SR30, should probably aim for 28.

Side note: not sue how much the RowAlong plan contributed (did it with 4 sessions per week). I have to say that only a few sessions felt challenging (the pace is your 2K current PB +something), all the others felt way too easy. Next cycle I'll try something more classical (like the 8x500m 3min rest @ 2KRP) for the hard sessions.

I'm (sort of) on the same ... hmm ... boat :)

Goal is sub-7min, but I'm not built for rowing and turning 50yo in 8 months. Let's call it a challenge :)

Great score! The pacing wasn't optimal yet or you just need to improve fitness to hold the split. This gives you the target for next trial - maybe shoot to go sub 7:30 or hold a 1:52 split for a 7:28. You can give it some time and do some good training before testing again too.

Good work! Yes, the pacing wasn't ideal but no you know. Don't worry too much about age and it impacting your goals. I set all my PBs after turning 50 as I didn't get into rowing until late 40s - I am now sort of hitting that wall of no longer improving but you got years of improvements ahead of you. I love the 7:00 goals I am seeing.

Well done. Training your mind to accept the discomfort and just trusting that it will eventually improve, or at least stay very similar, is essential for any TT, but especially the 2k.

Imo, try and increase the stroke rate, but don't focus us on it too much, as it may become counter-productive. My comfort zone is r28-30 (my HM PB was done at a very steady r28), but edging into r32+ is a tipping point for me
