How fast should I be?

Post by RishabhDagli » December 16th, 2022, 4:05 pm

I am a 14 year old male who has been doing rowing for about 2 years. What would be the ideal average split? My fastest is 1:59, but I average around 2:01 - 2:04

Your best ideal split is what you are capable of, and improving as you grow and get stronger.

Depends on the distance.
For 2K, look in the 2022/23 RowErg Rankings for 13-18 yrs. There are currently 385 entries of which about 40 are from 14 yrs old. Compare yourself with the median time of the 14-yrs group, which is 7:52 for 2K, i.e. a pace of 1:58.
The median time of a group means that half of the group is faster and the other half is slower.

It is worth noting these times are seasonal best for these rowers, potentially set during races or timed all-out pieces. So their regular training time might actually be a bit slower.

He gave two values: fastest and average.
So we know how fastest is 1s off of the median and his average is no average as this must be a single value and no range (/nerdmode off). It is obvious to say that the average of sessions is slower than the best.

Conclusion of the data: more than half of 14 years old male are faster. Not necessarily in the average of their sessions, but who knows (and who is interested in average?)...

Firstly, the topic poster didn't specify the distance for these splits. So he could be much faster than average, or much slower, or about average.

Secondly, 14 yrs are in a period of physical development that goes by leaps and bounds. Only he himself can guess whether he is in advance in his age group or delayed.

Thirdly, there is his ambition in this branch of sports. Is rowing a sport mainly to enjoy or to compete in? Only he knows. Clearly there are a few others in his age group who are able to row at a split below 1:45 in a 2K. Does it matter?

Plenty of thoughts to ponder.

Depends on your height and weight; at a guess, around 1.5 - 2 W/kg at rates 20-22.
08-1940, 179cm, 75kg post-op (3 bp).

Right, many things to assume.
As he asked for how fast he should be in the topic, I assumed the question to be with competitive background.
The question of average split is not really clear to me. Average in a row or average in different trainings?
From efficiency point of view an even average split during a row is optimal.

So I am 12 years old, I have done rowing for 2 years now(2019) and I want to know how fast I should be?
Weight: 90 pounds
Age: 12
PB: 2:06:40
Is this good enough? Should I be faster?
Even if it's not a troll, I wouldn't expect any significant details to be provided.
