BRIC '22

Anyone intending to race or spectate?

Bit pricey for 7mins of physical abuse

The in person v virtual racing has been discussed before but IMO this lessens the quality of field.
I can’t afford a 600 mile round trip with at least one night in a London hotel and pay £40 on top for 7 mins of pain. Pleased with my bronze medals from the past two years, but I think that will be it for me and BRIC.

Nah, not me. Same as Tony I can't justify the hassle and cost, especially as I'm not at all convinced trying to prepare for a 2k is a even slightly a good idea for me at the moment.

It is really well organised, but £39 is a lot to ask for every competitor, especially given how many age / weight groups there are for men and women.

If it wasn't a 400 mile round trip, I'd consider going as a spectator as it is a great atmosphere and really good to meet people face to face.

Just trying to think back to my first race which was BIRC 2003 at the NIA in Birmingham. I seem to think the entry fee then was £25 but spectators were free.

The entry fee alone was not enough to cover costs even though the field was 2500 to 3000. I think it was sponsored by AXA.

My last race was Manchester 2012. Hong Kong open in 2010 was good

I'm more local so might spectate....not sure. Certainly not racing anytime soon.

£55 if you want to do 500m & 2km 😬. I fear they will have a small field for this.

I've enjoyed spectating at quite a few of the BRICs at the Velopark and many BIRCs before that in Birmingham, Nottingham, etc. Certainly much more fun than following the virtual feeds. Obviously better for me in the old days when Spectating was free, but £12:50 seems OK for a day's entertainment. I'm shocked to see a £39/£55 entry fee though. Doesn't seem like a very "inclusive" pricing strategy despite the hype around opening up rowing to a wider audience - its even £27.50 for the kids, so Mummy and Daddy will have to be pretty affluent. Have they lost their sponsors (eg Mizuno) or is it just another step in the self fullfilling profecy that there's no demand for indoor rowing competitions, along the lines of canning masters later age groups in WRIC??

I'll be there with my wife.

I'll be the baby of the bunch in the 65-69 Lwt's and she's the old maid in the 60-64 Lwt race.

There will be quite a lot of us there from my club The Diamonds (Over Sixties Erging Group) and we're having a 'social' afterwards at the 'The Cow' Pub where I'll be booking a few tables in the upstairs room but happy to accomodate any guests that may want to come along.

I'm looking forward to meeting any from this forum that will also be there.

Re: BRIC '22 CANCELLED

Post by dafinchi » November 6th, 2022, 5:20 pm

Just had this from the organisers.
Dear Champs Crew,

Firstly, a huge thank you for volunteering to help at this year’s British Rowing Indoor Championships.

Unfortunately, we have some sad news. Due in a large part to the current economic situation and a steep rise in the cost of living, entries for the Indoor Championships are much lower than we would expect them to be at this stage.

We have given a great deal of thought to the viability of running BRIC this year and, unfortunately, due to the significant costs of running this event, we have come to the decision to cancel the competition.

We are extremely grateful for the interest that both returning Champs Crew members and those who are new to us this year have shown for the event, and we wish that we had better news.

We apologise for the disappointment and please do get in touch with any questions you might have. We have included some FAQs below, which we hope will be helpful.

Best wishes,

The British Rowing Indoor Championships Organising Committee
