37 Lunies hanging on now that we've reached week 4...keep going!!

Yesterday was a travel day - so apologies! Did pickup and ride that new bike from the bike shop to Mom's ...and riding in 98F was a scorcher for sure. It was a fun ride anyway - there's nothing quite like taking your new ride out for its inaugural miles! I will enjoy the rides more when it's a little cooler.

A few days ago, and then subsequently, it was a three owl day. Noted that one was in flight, and that I'd get the downloaded photo. Pretty excited about this sighting, because it can be hard enough to find the owls anyway, and to catch a photo in midflight - well, that was even more fun! There's one great horned that always looks like a sleepy Yoda (probably was out bopping mice on the head all night), and while it looks like more than 14 inches or so tall - I was surprised at the wing span!!

Very nice owl photo. I remember a long time ago attending a talk by Dr. Heinz Meng about falcons and owls. At one point during the lecture, he had an owl fly inches over all our heads - and like you said, with the wing span, it's quite large - and the amazing thing was you couldn't hear a thing... at which point the lecture moved to how the owl's flight was so quiet.

Took the bike out for a short spin early this AM - and saw a few things I did NOT expect to see in this part of the world. It's amazing how a bike can take you places you wouldn't otherwise know about, and how those places can be nestled in right next to community developments. Today's visual "catch" was a golden eagle, two black faced sheep (truly had to stop for the photo opp because I thought they looked like walruses!),horses and....an ostrich. I kid you not. All within a 5 miles radius. So. I encourage you to explore your nearby neighborhoods with some alternative transport (could be your feet, your skis, your bike) - guarantee there's stuff out there that will surprise you!

Yes, lucky! But mostly being in the right place at the right time - with the right camera equipment. That owl was chased out of its sleeping spot by a curious dog (not mine). It flew to a rooftop, and you could just tell that it was going to fly. Camera at the ready - and multiple photos. Two were really good. Same owl, but this one is more intense.

Meanwhile, up in Halibut Cove, AK, things are looking pretty green ! But...getting ahead of the story (I work at these to keep you all entertained, and because I figure if something catches my curiosity...it might catch yours as well). Our man in Alaska, aka Alaska Dan, sent me a photo of what he called mansized tinker toys. These 260 lb toys were something he designed and built for a friend who lives in Halibut Cove to help reduce beach erosion. I asked how he was going to get them there because Halibut Cove is accessible by water approach. He said that he had to take them apart into somewhat manageable 60 lb loads, put them in his truck (that meant of ton of weight in the truck), and get them to the ferry. I believe a transfer was also involved. Once at the final destination, he had to lug them up the beach, 60 lb at a time. His reward was dinner out at Halibut Cove...and what a view! Clouds reflected in the water! We'll see how the tinkertoy erosion control works out! Again, something you don't see every day!

The picture of those erosion control devices is fascinating. I wonder how durable they will be in the (presumably) harsh Alaskan elements?

I asked about the installation - and really just how they were supposed to work! He's modeled these tinkertoys on a larger model tinkertoys that can be used to line an ocean jetty.



Dan's tinkertoys are installed with rock bolts in interlocking sets.



He explained to me that these are interlocking, multifaceted structures that are designed to deflect wave action and prevent erosion. That's what he is attempting to simulate with his much smaller tinkertoys. As you can see in photo above, the limited amount of beach is right at the base of the stairway. Cool idea anyway!
