Are they any good for keeping fit or very likely to be used as much as my 8-year-old nearly new turbo trainer?

Excellent for keeping fit. You just have to do one thing - use it regularly.

Chris, I'd say that just about any healthy person willing to put the time and effort into it can get or stay fit using the erg, and if they can't, odds are it's not the machine's fault.

It is a great tool for fitness training. Unlike many devices, it is often used in rehabbing after injury because it is so low impact and so is much less likely to cause injury itself. The level of work it gives you is dependent on the intensity level of your input effort, so it is easily scalable person to person in your household.
I’d go as far as to call it the closest thing to a perfect exercise machine as there is out there, at least in my opinion!
