Back in the land of saguaros - waiting for the monsoon rains.
It was a Discovery Channel moment along the Coal Creek Trail yesterday! I'd taken a "real" bike vs the retrofitted pedal assist bike for the first time in two years. I was sure I had ridden at least 10 miles, but no...it was only 6.5 ish. Along the trail, saw a red tailed hawk in the grasses. It looked like it was struggling, maybe injured. But no. It was just busy catching a mouse, which dangled from its beak while the hawk flew up to the tree branch above. Very cool, even if the mouse didn't think so.

Danwho converted the hawk video into a gif I can share - so here it is:
Meanwhile, other "wildlife" morphed into some insect life. Yesterday evening, there was a cricket SOMEWHERE in the house. I figured I either had to embrace the noise or hunt it down. Or turn on a fan to counteract the cricket noise....still, the statement of embracing it or figuring it out applies to many situations!

I was on a roadrunner sighting mission this morning. Haven't seen one in almost a year, so I went hunting. Wasn't successful, but there were other positives! Sabino Canyon Recreation area has many trails - and an electric TRAM that goes up the canyon for those who wish to ride up, and maybe walk down, etc. Today's sky was a bit foreboding, so perhaps fewer visitors. Thunder rumbled across the Catalina Mountains - and it was truly awesome. There are multiple signs at the start that tell you "Heat Kills - turn around when you've used half your water." I needed a bigger container! As we head into August through October, not only will all the erging teams be busy with the Dog Days Challenge, the Fall Teams Challenge, and more! These are prime months for outside time here in Tucson. The rangers will be leading nighttime hikes, full moon not always included. So. Take a look around at things available in your backyard recreation areas - and do some different walks - just to see what's out there!

Wow! That is a truly awesome desert shot with the storm clouds.
You got me reading about roadrunners. I don't remember knowing that roadrunners actually hunt rattlesnakes, something that makes them nice to keep around.

Tomorrow, Lunies, is the start of Dog Days Challenge! You'll get that week 1 total done in a blink, and then it will take a couple of blinks for week 2. Week 3...it's starting to feel like...like HOMEWORK...and week 4, holy cow...you're in the thick of things for sure! So get ready to spend more time with your erg. Seamlessly, you'll be preparing for the Fall Team Challenge...won't that be a fortuitous thing!
The Dog Days Challenge might not specifically commemorate the canine species...but some of us erg during this Challenge with current and former special pups in mind. If you have a dog or dogs that you row, ski or bike for, including Angel Dogs, feel free to post photos! Every pet we own, no matter what variety, always stays in our hearts. Forever.
Yesterday was a travel day, filled with some delays...but overall good. I did eye spy a juvenile golden eagle flying in and out of a mesquite tree during a walk yesterday AM. I was able to get within 20 feet for a quick phone camera snapshot. It was an impressive bird !

I survived RAGBRAI. Took a rest day and felt really strong on Monday. Knocked out a 90 minute BikeErg session at an average of 270 watts. My previous best was 60 minutes at 280 (or 285, I forget) watts. I'm going to do a 60 minute FTP test soon - and hopefully hit 300 watts average!
