The first month of the new season followed the pattern established last time around. Congratulations to the MAD team on topping the leaderboard. The Diamonds turned out 35 boats; an impressive participation, 26 more than the next most populous squad.
Future Challengers:
July: Whitby Friendship ARC
August: Forum Flyers
September: RowAlong
Regards,
Joe

You're about two weeks too early.
There is no schedule apart from the one listed here:
viewtopic.php?f=6&t=161998
Which also tells you who's setting it.

So that's part of the challenge? No idea what to train for.
On a related note: I think you allow Ski Ergs. Any provision for Bike Ergs (presumably at double distance)?

We do allow the "Ski erg team". We don't allow Bikeergs.

I've been curious about the CTC for a while now. I was just wondering if someone can jump onto any team they want? I live by the Hudson River and when I rowed, I rowed in Poughkeepsie so I was looking to join "He'll On The Hudson". Are these teams open or do I need approval?

Some do, some don't. You need to find a team leader and ask them.

Looking to join a team to get involved in this CTC game for the first time, just pulled a 16:49 for this month's 5km challenge. I'd be a HW.

There are going to be a lot, if not every team very happy to have you join them.
There are lots of options, and I row for Team Oarsome, but Forum Flyers and Sub 7 are both active on here too. If you have any set criteria you can search on Facebook for a specific team, but there are loads to choose from.

Haha, fair enough, but it's only you isn't it, or are there more members in here that I'm not aware of?
