I spotted this speedster the first day of this trip to Tucson. As noted, the ground here moves with every step - things dart with a rustle. But what kind of hybrid lizard - scorpion was this? Tried to get a photo of it today, and no luck, so off to Google I went. Perhaps some of you have seen one of these? The zebra tail is only on the underside - although I do understand that these zebras can swish their tails back and forth, catlike, and you'll see the stripes then also. Eeek-worthy, and something new to me!

So I thought I'd see what Google had to say about raccoons:
"As a general rule, the best raccoon repellents irritate the senses of a raccoon to keep them away. Peppermint essential oil, bright lights, coffee grounds, chili pepper, cayenne pepper, epsom salt, predator urine, ammonia, vinegar, loud noises and fragrant soaps all can repel raccoons."

But after a little more research, I think I'd nix the fragrant soaps idea:

ImageIt's been long enough since I did outdoor cycling that my routine is surely lacking! It was a fire drill to get ready! Still, I always learn from these events - what could have, should have been a lot better...and how could I forget to charge my rechargeable lights?! And that rain jacket that would have been handy when what seemed like a sudden downpour occurred...naturally, I hadn't thought of it either! When the temperature drops into the low 50s, and you're soaked...you know you'll remember the next time. It was an urban bike ride - one to check out some of the protected bike lanes that the city of Denver has installed. Saw my first bike specific signals, and was able to utilize the Colorado Safety Stop...which just means that if a cyclist comes to a red light, and there is no traffic, s/he may proceed through the intersection after coming to a stop. And a stop sign may be treated as a yield sign, again if no traffic present. One is careful using these maneuvers, because done without regard - it can not only tick off motorists, but it can surely get you hurt. The protected bike lanes are awesome - everyone knows where to ride or drive without infringing. Urban biking also put our small group into the area of many, MANY homeless camps. Not just tents, these were semi-structures made of pallets, boxes, whatever could be found. It is a hard life for certain.

You know how every so often a local event comes up that makes you say to your friends "we should do that!" ?? Well summmrr surely brings a few of those out of the woodwork (and perhaps some of you will tell us which ones have piqued your interest!). I had heard about the event listed on the banner below the "Howdy Folks! Welcome to Golden! signage last year - and thought it sounded like a very fun monthly celebration of the family ride. This family ride is held on the fourth Tuesday of each month from May to September on the pathways and trails around Golden, CO - and there are some beasty hills involved. Everyone gathers at a place called Bob's Burgers at the end of the ride, and you listen to sounds of local bands...or, in this case, it may be the sound of thunder. The gully washers (we used to call them frog stranglers) are due for another round this evening, and Golden's altitude is about 5700 ft...so could be some hail bits in there. Traditionally this is known as the tutu ride...and in the spirit of things, I hope there are many tutus (some with LEDs sprinkled in the fabric!) to help light the way of the riders. We'll see what the weather holds as the day progresses.

The ride would quite likely kill me ... but, the lighted tutu's, and beer-with-bands, sound great.

Hmm, lighted tutus sound interesting, but gosh that must make for uncomfortable riding!

I’ll let you know! You get a tutu that has elastic waist and put it on over your bike gear. I ordered an orange one to match my orange bike….should be hilarious!

A remarkably rainy time here in Colorado - good light for photos, though, and the pups will be happy to be in the rain. Great opportunity to check out the rain gear, too. Trust me - I will be DELIGHTED to be inside for the erging.
