EXR

Post by volent » May 17th, 2022, 6:44 pm

Any impressions of the EXR app for rowing? I started a free trial today and I must admit I am not wicked impressed. I am use to cycling apps like Zwift and Rouvy so my opinion is probably influenced by those apps. I think if it had real life images like Rouvy or FulGaz I would like it alot better. I will go through the free trial period. Maybe it will grow on me.

Just get the free RowedBiker App on your phone and connect the PM5 on the Erg to Zwift.

I would wait for RowPro V6 its looking like a huge update with the graphics and they have taken onboard several of my suggestions.

Some of use got sent a sample of the graphics but not sure we should share it on here.

RowPro is pretty much the only thing with live online rowing with others.

Perhaps KinoMap suits your needs better. They have real video's of rowers.

I gave it a try, but didn't really do a lot for me either. I think that no app would though....I seem happy enough as I've always been, just listening to music and looking at the numbers on PM5 (and ErgData for the last couple of years or so).

I did some beta testing on EXR last year. It was ok as an every now and then diversion, although they were developing some nicer functions about the time they sent beta testers the “buy in or you’re out” message… thanks, but no thanks.

I’m still just going PM5 and a TV for workouts. I’d like to try something, too!

Some huge changes coming in the next version of RowPro, I would keep an eye out for the release of version 6.

No point buying any rowing software unless you want to row live online with others.

EXR is what got me back into using my rower again a couple of weeks ago. I'm not a heavy user of the rower, but I would like to make it a routine part of my fitness a few times per week. It helps bring the basement where I have my rower and bike alive and gives me some scenery to look at while rowing away on the C2.

I also use Zwift for my cycling, and currently have a computer running Zwift and now EXR using a 60" television as its display. It really works well.

I've tried RowPro in the past because it was really the only thing that gave me close to a visual rowing experience while I rowed. But it seemed dated and lacked development. As mentioned above, maybe their version 6 will have improvements, I just don't see their development team as being as dedicated to their software as EXR devs currently seem to be.

I haven't used the EXR mobile app, and currently have my PM5 plugged into my computer via the USB and it has worked well with EXR.

I think EXR is in a somewhat early stage of development still, but the couple of emails I have sent them they have replied to so that tells me they are an active development team that does want to receive feedback. They do plan on it being multiplayer where people could row together or compete. They also have a true development team dedicated to this software.

To note: EXR uploads workout data to C2logbook, Strava, and TrainingPeaks

I plan on staying subscribed to EXR for a while and seeing how the development progresses. Hopefully, development improvements are fast and EXR becomes a Zwift of rowing.

FYI RowPro has new owners as from a few months ago so you can expect some major changes in the next version.

Developing a bit of rowing software appears to be quite easy, the really hard part is getting the online aspect of it working without a hitch

Yeah, my position too. I like the new lake they added with the castle, as well as the baloons, boats and fish to make it more realistic. I especially like the other rowers you meet at random places, so you have someone to overtake. I am recovering from injury, so I rowed along another virtual rower with pace 2:28 for 5K. Nice little coincidence that made my session a bit less boring.

Like you said, when you provide feedback they do respond quite well. I like where it is heading, just casual rows and fun games (my son likes bouy blast, my daughter likes to play shark attack) to keep you moving.

I am not renewing after the free trial but I am going to keep an eye on it. Maybe when they have competition and it matures more. Not worth $120 a year right now IMHO.

I did buy it and I regret it.

It gives unreliable data. The other day it told me I had travelled 10.7km but I had been rowing for three minutes. Sure, there are hot air balloons in the sky and fish in the river, but that's not much use when the data is so wrong. There is only really one course that interests me - Charles River - and distances that you can row are not convenient - 10km to 19.9km. Can't row with others and most of the updates are for silly thubgs like ducks in the river.

Excited about Row Pro 6 but won't be renewing subscription for EXR. Barely use it because puts me in a bad mood when screws up my data. I don't care about things like earning points to buy the avatar a new shirt.

Shame as some of the graphics are good, but overall regret spending money on it and would advise others not to do likewise.

RowPro V6 will be the leader when it is released.

My hope is that it's finally good enough to draw current users of Zwift across.

The problem with rowing software is that it appeals to only a small percentage of rowers. I suspect the percentage is really low and lower than cyclists but because there is like 1000 times more cyclists than indoor rowers you get a massive difference in the number of online users.

The graphics in V6 are a huge jump forward on on par with EXR.

There is a setting that forces it to listen to the distance and speed of the rower.I must say I've experimented a lot with the Bluetooth interface, both on PM5 and FTMS mode on Open Rowing Monitor, and I never encountered this.
