100000m skierg
100000m skierg
Hi Guys
I'm aiming to do 100000m skierg in October this year, I'm putting in the miles for sure. The bit I struggle with is fluid/food intake, when, where, what and how often? If someone in the forum has done the challenge before it would be great to hear from you.
Many thanks
Mark

Re: 100000m skierg
I've never done anything like this on a skierg, but I've done enough rowing longer distances.
I found that ideally I'd drink every 20 minutes, but only smallish sips. I'd eat snacks randomly as these are a bit harder to incorporate, and you can cope for a while if you've eaten a decent meal a bit beforehand.
I'm not sure of how much difference there will be as it's possible to row one handed, but I assume you'll have to stop? Good luck with it.

I may be remembering wrong but I think Freddy Hancock has done a couple of 100ks on the skierg. I think he's now with the MAD team - if you can track him down maybe he can help.

I think Freddie did five of them in the space of a week or two. He'll be a very valuable source of information

Done a few 100ks on the skierg. All five of them were between 115 watts and 120 watts if I remember correctly. I did all of them indoors as it was too hot outside and I had a big fan blowing cool air in my direction.
When it comes to fluids, I had a few energy gels as they immediately raise your blood sugar level. I definitely lost some time having these but my first priority was completing the 100ks (I was not 100% concerned on time, only goal speed wise was 100 or more watts average).
I can give you more specific guidance, but it depends on whether your goal is to complete the 100k or to get a fast time?

Re: 100000m skierg
I completed my 100k Skierg on Friday 28th April. It was in my birthday week, as I had turned 60.
I had a year or so preparing - basically just getting some distances under my belt. Usually 100k/week - with a mixture of rowing and Skierg. As I had previously done the 100k row nearly 2 years ago, I utilized the Eddie Fletcher plan once again. It is invaluable and I would recommend to all who will want to undertake this challenge. Basically, good fitness required beforehand, then a 14 week structured program around heart rate, stroke rate and power (in that order).
I had a stretch target of 8 hours and had broken it down into hour blocks. I knew that the real discomfort would arrive at about the 62k mark and this proved to be the case. As I'd adopted a faster rate up to that point, it was a matter of slowing down slightly and just getting it completed. I won't say it was easy, but I had prepared well both physically and mentally.
I am not a big sweater, so I didn't stop too often for fluids - just quaffed a cup of electrolyte and/or water whilst on the go. I did stop at the 65k mark to stretch the hands and feet, for about 45 seconds. I ate a small banana with salt sprinkled on around 70k and this seemed to keep the cramps to a minimum.
No real problems post event - I was buggered and sore of course, but no injuries.
Anyway - job done. 7:56:40.8
