Been looking forward to rowing a fast 1k during World Virtual Indoor sprints, but I’m honestly disappointed by this one. I’ve worked night shifts on 7 of the past 9 nights and my sleep quality has been very poor. I think I’m closer to 2:52 speed if I’m well rested and doing it on a good day. Im going to keep at the 500/1000m training and give it another go later this spring

Re: New Personal Best! Brag About That New Pb!
A small PR for me (0.5 secs) today in the World Virtual Indoor Sprints. Currently 7th in my age group, but guessing I'll be lucky to stay in the top 15 by the end of the weekend
I’ve got to be happy with this given I missed 3 weeks with Covid and only started training again 2 weeks ago and only decided to row last weekend. But I’d hoped for something a little quicker, which was maybe unrealistic. Probably kept my fast start going a little too long - plan had been to get to 1.34 by 200 and stay there as long as possible but I felt very heavy by 400 and couldn’t keep the pace I’d wanted. Lots of erg fear from 400-750 but the pain didn’t get any worse and I managed to up the rate a little towards the end, but only good enough to maintain my pace as my power went. Looking at learning from the splits...too fast at the beginning and then needed to keep the rate at 37 through the middle third.
Still….a PR is a PR and lots of hunger for more

I wonder if the blistering first 125m hurt your efforts? I guess that's all alactate stuff, but using it up for a fast start means that it's not there later.
A pb of any sort is outstanding given the covid-induced break to your training.

a PR is a PR - congratulations! sorry you didn't hit your goal speed but not surprising given your lack of sleep
I'm looking at that sr - wowee, you must be really motoring. Inspiring to me. I'm trying to get my rate up from 35 to 37 for my 1k this weekend - you're taller than me and getting 5 more than my goal speed. Well done
(also...there's 2 days left...you think you can rest up and go again?)
I opted not to re-do it this morning. I'll have a few more opportunities to re-do it this spring, and I wanted to get back to regular training.
As for the rate, I'd like to bring it down a few beats. I do think I need to do more rate-capped work, I've always been someone who rates a bit higher, but mid 40s feels too much like spinning my wheels.

Hey nick considering the fact you have had covid and limited training for this event, iirc, you were also struggling near xmas for any good training. To have beat your pr is cracking, considering you took 5 secs off it last year with lots of build up.aussie nick wrote: ↑March 12th, 2022, 9:12 pmA small PR for me (0.5 secs) today in the World Virtual Indoor Sprints. My point is that you must have maintained a good level of fitness to get the pr this time round. So with a smoother run next time you have another 2 or 3 secs there I reckon to come off, at least.

I wonder if the blistering first 125m hurt your efforts? I guess that's all alactate stuff, but using it up for a fast start means that it's not there later.
A pb of any sort is outstanding given the covid-induced break to your training.
thank you Max and yes, I wondered too about the fast start. When I looked at the screen after my first 4 pulls, it was at 1.22/500 so it's definitely possible. when I next do a 1k tt (and I have a goal to tt .5,1,2 and 5k before the end of the rowing year), I'll aim to get onto target pace quicker.
it's interesting though, reviewing all the 1ks on the sub 7 page, we've all done the same thing and gone out very hard. Some of them managed to get onto race pace and stay there whereas most had worse drops offs than me.
IDK - Keith registered another incredible time and has been rowing world class 1ks for years, so I'll be interested to hear his pacing strat

Re: New Personal Best! Brag About That New Pb!
thank you Martin, Stu, Dutch (sorry, I don't know how to multi quote). I very much appreciate the kind words.
with a night's sleep in me, I actually think this result is perfect encouragement & inspiration. Great to show improvement and get a PR but I've got one in a way that shows there's more to come if I put in the work. I'm now really fired up to get a few good months training in me and see where I can get to

That's an amazing time, especially considering the circumstances. I agree prob another few seconds there on a better day.mjk wrote: ↑March 11th, 2022, 7:07 pmJust barely squeaked out a 1000m PB

Great Row! With the missed training, to get a PB is amazing and shows you can go lower. It does look like you went out too fast but now you know it catches up with you and you have a good target for next attempt. I will be posting my time that includes a write-up on my strategy in a bit on the Training thread.aussie nick wrote: ↑March 12th, 2022, 9:12 pmA small PR for me (0.5 secs) today in the World Virtual Indoor Sprints.
Still….a PR is a PR and lots of hunger for more

thanks Keith and yes, definitely need help with pacing and also hope I can get faster. I don't think I have the ability to get to 3.00 but my goal is 3.04.9 by the end of the year. I can definitely improve my conditioning and I also haven't done any real lower body strength work for years, so I'm hopeful that if I can sustain that without injury I'll be able to improve my wattage and go faster
