What is "ANS" impact?

ANS is autonomic nervous system.

If you are rowing 1-3 times a week then don't worry about ANS stress. [snip]
Got it. Thanks.
Doing 5-6 sessions a week, 2-3 hard and 3 SS so I guess I need to be careful.
It's interesting that you mention plateau/burnout. That's what happened last time I tried the interactive plan, with probably no SS. Just got stuck.
This time around I'm interested to see how much improvement will be down to sitting there and putting in the time, as well as the harder sessions.

Well done, looks like sub 40 is reachable soon!

Thanks all. Would love to go sub 40. Not that far away but psychologically feels like a tough barrier to get over. Lol. Will keep putting the work in and maybe test in a month or so.

If you can ignore the snarky comments, this video describes exactly what's wrong with some of the plans and why they drive plateau/burnout with the supporting research. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C0n-nnRbFBs (you can skip the first 60 seconds)

Cyclists tend to talk about gaining 20 to 40 watts/year on their 1 hour power (short pieces have higher gain). That's the type of gains I'm looking from from a plan very similar to yours. That said, competitive performance seems to scale with total training time so I'm hoping more SS time = higher gains.

From other reading, plan on many months to 2 years to see impact of the steady state work. On the good side, if you stop for a few months the steady state work adaptations drop off much more slowly than the VO2 max style workouts.

Went out hard and tried to hang on to as much of those gains during the middle 1200m before lighting the touchpaper on the last 400m. Targets I had in mind were minimum 1:56, probably 1:54, best 1:52......so really happy to break 7:30. Slightly dodgy knee held up OK.

Woke up feeling sad and depressed today. Told myself: "screw that!"

https://log.concept2.com/profile/1425102/log/61629251

Haven't tried a 2k since mid-December.
Set a personal best of 6:58.4, dropping 4.5 seconds off my previous time.
It was hard. It didn't feel good. I wanted to give up twice during the session.

I feel better now.

Hitting sub-7 has been a major goal of mine - I knew it was possible for me, and had been working towards it last year.
A bit surprised to see it happen today, given the lack of any distance-specific training for a couple of months.
But there was a lot of targeted work put in since September, so it was really only a matter of time.

My next big goal for the year is a full marathon (any pace accepted; just hoping to finish). That won't even be attempted for a few months.

Time Meters Pace Watts S/M H/R
20:49.1. 5,000m 2:04.9 180 24 168

So. Time to see what the next 8 or so weeks bring.

I haven’t really thought about what I want to get out of this beyond going sub 20:00.

We shall see!
Hope all well and been making progress with your goals.

Not much to add unfortunately but quoting myself for context plus adding some info now I can hopefully get back on the rower.
No one can likely even remember but I would hate to leave you all in suspense!

So beyond that initial 20:49 I never did go sub 20.00.

I pulled a 7:34 2k and messing about after a session a 0:16.9 100m, but those were the only ‘stand outs’ if you like.

I continued to keep at the plan but unfortunately had a reoccurrence of an old health issue which knocked me over big time (I thought it was done with) and then started to mess my mental health up and I gave up training (not just the rowerg) full stop. Counter productive I know but…

I’m not 100% but have been told there’s no issue to not train and mentally I need it so I’ve started again. Have lost so much fitness it’s disheartening but I’m going to slowly build it back and cross my fingers everything else health wise behaves.

For now though PR’s are a long way down the list.

500m, not so much a new PB as the first time I've done it. I was curious to see how accurate Paul's Law worked out from my 5k PB, as I haven't trained for short distances.
Turns out it's pretty good as https://www.machars.net/ultimate.php forecast 1:39.1 and my actual time was 1:38.8.

Haha... Yeah, I didn't go into this session with a plan or target, just expected to row some blues away.
Barely made it across the finish line after the bottom fell out halfway through - but didn't want to give up when I realized that (even struggling) I might get under that 7 minute mark. Thank goodness this wasn't an actual race!

Your log looks like you could do even better with such a strong finish! Won't be long and you'll have to post a new PB for the same distance.

Hang on til the end when you see its possible 😄💪🏻
Same was happening in my HM - I saw the predicted time around 1:22 and though it must be possible to stay below! That motivated me highly until the end...

Yes, I think so. It was my first try and had a plan I followed. It was hard, but doable. Was only breathing hard, but falling from the rower 😅
