PM 3 issue

Post by Rowan McSheen » February 13th, 2022, 8:38 am

Problem with the PM3 on my model D. It lights up okay when a button is pressed but refuses to record any metres. This applies to a just row and also to programmed workouts from RowPro, when it shows the distance or time to be rowed but does nothing when the handle is pulled.

Batteries are okay, no error messages. I've unplugged and reinserted the sensor wire. Nothing doing.

Does this ring any bells? Anything else I can do? (bearing in mind that I'm DIY-phobic and barely able to tell one end of a screwdriver from the other).

You've tried most of this already --> https://www.concept2.com/service/monito ... stuck-zero

Maybe check the end of the pickup wire that goes to the flywheel. Wiggle it with flywheel spinning, see if the PM3 starts up.

Maybe reset the PM3 with techniques here: https://www.concept2.com/service/monito ... %20monitor.

Whats the serial number on the PM3 ?

The old ones are prone to corrosion now, if its not the "Stuck on Zero" problem its probably time to get a new PM5.

The sensor wire can fail if it has had a life of being wiggled or the TACH socket that it plugs into can come loose on the board.

If its a 2003-2006 PM3 its probably had its day. If yours is an old rower also get a whole new sensor assembly, the new dual coil version puts out enough power to run the monitor while rowing so a new set of batteries should last a couple of years.

It dates back to 2007. I've done the basic checks advised on the C2 website and no luck.

I guess I could retrofit a PM5. Or use this as an excuse to treat myself to a new machine as a retirement present. Decisions ...

You know the answer, it just depends on getting the OK from the household finance director for the new machine.

I do indeed know the answer, because I sacked the finance director years ago and assumed the duties myself :D

I'm also told that ergs with the new stealth black paint job are faster than the grey ones.

2007, the PM3 may be the old one still you need to check the serial number on the back of it.

Regardless its probably time for a new PM5, its an easy swap over and you will not want to go back to the PM3 as the wireless heartrate and connectivity to your phone alone make it worth the upgrade.
