My german is a bit rusty, but this clip shows 4 Eights rowing together to generate enough wattage to pull a ferry barge across a canal. The 4 teams were in europe to race in a dutch long distance canal race (americans took 3rd i believe).

Find the indoor rowing picture on the web page - and look for the video link. Well worth watching!

Any german speakers are encouraged to post further details...

-bill

\

http://www.zdf.de/ZDFde/inhalt/17/0,187 ... 00.html

It looks like 5 rows of 8 guys rowing. (40?) which appears to put the watts at ~600 each (~1:23 Pace) for the 2 minutes. But it appeared that they fell just a bit short.

Definitely a pretty good gathering of athleticism to even have a chance however.

i believe that each row represented a national team 8 that came to europe to race - so there were british, german, canadian, american and dutch teams all pulling (hence the 1:23 splits...)

I'm not sure what happened by losing the bet?

-bill

QUOTE(PaulS @ Oct 4 2005, 02:58 PM)

It looks like 5 rows of 8 guys rowing. These guys were seriously National team members???!? I question that. Look at the video again, and tell me that some of these guys have ever seen an erg before. Serious technique isssues, strokes rates that are almost nothing.

If they are indeed national team members, they should have all been able to hold a 1:23 for two minutes (provided they were all heavyweights).

Fun to watch though....and oh so close to completing the bet.

More information:

this race was installed two days before the EON-Hanse Cup in Rendsburg (12,7 k´s in the eight). There were five Teams in the race on the water.

The British National Team (5.), the Dutch National Team (4.), the American National Team (3.), the German National Team (2.) and the Team of Cambridge (Winner).

The first race on ergs was a bet in a game show.

On Sunday was a Sprint race on ergs (500m): The British Team won with an average of 715 Watts over 500m, then Germany 663 Watts, USA 651 Watts, Cambridge 639 Watts and 616 Watts for the Dutch Team.

At the boat race on Monday the British Team was last by more then 3 minutes to the winner Cambridge. Germany second by 18 sec., USA third with 45 sec. and the Dutch Team fourth with 1 and a half minutes to Cambridge.

So Dwayne keep cool with your sprints!
I know it may look like less, but that's the nature of decent technique, put a stroke watch to them (I just happened to have one in my bag )

A German speaking friend filled in some details, that 23kwatts was what would have had to have been maintained for the 2 minutes to complete the task. The group went somewhere over that for a while, but faded at ~1:40 and lost the bet.

Also, 1:23 may be trivial to monsters like Dwayne, but to hold it for even 2 minutes is still a very small percentile. 723m in 2 minutes

Afterall, there are only 16 in the 2006 rankings with a 500 of 1:23 or faster.

With 15 seconds to go, it ran up and got stuck on the land.

So it looks to me that they did it.

What you see is the bet on Saturday: Indeed they had to pull the ferry over the Nord-Ostsee Kanal. They reach the other side, but one or two meters are missing:

They lost the bet!

This is one of those interesting things about requiring a threshold of power to move the thing (23,000 watts), while a bit more may move it faster, a bit less won't move it at all. It took nearly 10 seconds to get things up to moving and then there were 30 seconds remaining when output dropped below 23,000 and the ferry coasted to a stop, not to be started again.

GA,
What was the prize if they did make it?

Hi Paul,

there was no prize for the erg rowers, even when they win the bet.

The game show is one of germans favourite TV shows and there is nothing to win for them. The guy who has proposed the bet, has to do something stupid, when he (or here: the rowers) loose the bet. If he wins, he could win a few bucks, but the spectators have to vote for his bet, as "Best bet of the show". A spectacular, an outstanding milestone of German entertainement.

I zapped after the erging competition, but I think, because they loose, they have to eat an erg for breakfast or something like that.

But it was nice PR for C2 Germany .

Jürgen

(I can hold 1:23 for a couple of strokes)

Did any of you guys ever see the episode of Myth Busters where the team of 8s pulled one of the stars of the show on water skis? Was pretty cool to see. They actually got him up on his skis and pulled around a lake. Impressive too.

Darren

hi,
does anyone know how to get out the power of the c2? obviously it must be possible or how could the rowers move the ferry? it would be nice to produce the power that is needed to watch tv while rowing.
peter
