Finally have beaten one of two 20 year old pbs I have been chasing. In 2001 I did 332m in 1 min, today I have finally beaten it doing 339m. Absolutely ecstatic. :D

I have been working on sprint starts, 6x20sec 20r intervals and have shifted to a 5x5 weight regime. I can really feel the difference all over.

I started really well and settled in after 100m. I went from 1.25 ave to 1.27.5 but mid way I got a little too relaxed and slipped to 1.29 but I brought it back to 1.28 ish and finished well.

The funny thing with this was a couple of days ago I got that feeling when you know you feel good. I decided today at about 3 pm to do it in an hours time and literally 1 minute later Mr negative appeared in my head.
I carried on anyway getting ready and sat on the erg, did my warm ups and I was getting worse and worse so I just thought right you wont win and went and got a bowl put it on a chair next to the rower and said to my self I am going all out and will puke in that if I have to from the effort. Well the brain could not argue with that and it went quiet.

This places me in the top 10th percentile in the world overall and 17th place in Britain for my age bracket, very happy with that.
My aim is for 350m eventually with this category.

1min, 339m, watts 505, spm 48, ave 1.28.4, df 150. Hr was 144 one min after the event.

Great work! The 1 Minute is tough because it's basically pull hard as you can and don't stop and you don't have the "faster you go the faster its over with" since a time trial. Taking down an old PB is awesome.

new 1k PR 3.09.8 at sr 34, 1.34.9/500 a PR by 2.3 seconds

results not confirmed, but I finished 2nd in my race so...unless someone entered my event at another time (which is allowed), I won a silver medal in thr 50-54 age group at the Aus championships

the virtual race software definitely adds another dimension to it - you get counted down from 10 and then go on the Go! so your final time has your reaction time added to what you would normally row in a time trial

my plan was fast 10 strokes, then settle in and go through half way in 1.34.5 and that's exactly what I did. Huge amount of chest pain from 400 onwards but it didn't get any worse (or much worse anyway) and I managed to keep my pace pretty well. the second half I definitely slowed - second 500 was 1.35.3 but I held my speed better than the others. I was coming 5th at 400 and 3rd at half way, got to second place with 200 to go and ended up coming second by 8m.

really happy with the PB and (hopefully) the medal after the broken foot 8 weeks ago and the virus earlier in the week. definitely the right decision not to row the 2k

relieved it's over and I'm gonna have a big drink today (and probably tomorrow)

thank you all for your support and encouragement
Woohoo - was waiting to see this result! Sounds like you paced it just about perfect and fought thru the pain. There is definitely some lag with the comp rows too and for 1K any little difference is magnified. You are making some great improvements - you are in my age group too so don't improve too much more :P

Thanks Keith. I think next time I would not try and keep some in reserve. I think there is another 7 to 10 meters to be had. :)

Wow! Congratulations!
That quite something to beat a PB that old, and to have such a great distance.

thanks Keith, I appreciate it! Still a very (very) long way away from 2.57 and I can't imagine ever getting there, but I'm happy to be making progress still. I do think I've got a little more in me in a 1k tt right now...both from the time saved from the lag after Go time and also just attempting it without the nerves. for both my competitions, I've just built it up a lot mentally and my heart rate was way higher at the start of the race than normal. it definitely impacted my 2k, although I was more aware of it for the 1k.

I'm not sure if I'll attempt another 1k tt before the end of the year - I'm hoping to lodge a fast 500, which I've never done and then get a sub 6.40 and ideally a sub 18 5k as the priorities - but maybe I'll fit one in.

hope you get back to full fitness soon

Good plans and targets. Then once you hit them you set new targets, having something to aim for just helps training and motivation.

Pb today with 36 meters more than previous in a 30 min tt. Discipline was all over the place, my ego wanted 7500m and I blasted off but after 15 mins my mind blew apart and I literally just eased up then carried on 10 secs later and did this 3 times. In the end I decided to steal a few meters more which is exactly what I should have done in the first place. I prob would have had an extra 75 meters or so if I had stayed at even pace, lol.
But I know now for next time how to pace it. Better to steal a little than die trying to grab a load

Thanks Martin, you are right. I will prob try something like a 2.03 first 1200m then negative split from there. I have been trying to go quick for first 1200, then ease up for the mid section but it goes wrong and I go too quick for too long lol.

yes, I was going to suggest a negative split Dutch - over the longer distances you really can make up a lot over the second half of the race and it's a psychologically and physically more enjoyable way to row

congrats on the PR!

Hit by the flu last week. On the mend, but still don't have any lungs, really.

So, figured I'd do a little bit of sprinting, instead.

Hit a 100m pb

13.4s - 1:07.1/500 - 54 spm
Df = 215
chop stuff and carry stuff
