I echo Anna's comments on the Fall Team Challenge. James Slipetz was definitely a beast with a mind-boggling 765K and Harry Saisa was also amazing at 505K.

We had 37 people reach 100K of which 20 reached 200K. Definitely a good month's worth of work. Well done by all who participated, as every meter helped our team!

Congrats to Jim S, Harry the Hamster, and all the 10-15k per day rowers for putting up the big numbers🙏. A body do get weary doing that!😩

As for those with a healthy respect for mens sana in corpore sana, rest assured that taking a day off occasionally is equally commendable.

@ ARG: I found it easier to do 100k FTC starting 1 Oct. than faffing around with the Dog Days for an entire month.

Having access to, and dividing the effort between, all three ergs was way easier than my 400+k rowerg effort last year and pales in comparison to Jack's Top-o-the-Flyer's 500+k posting last year.
Thanks for the acknowledgement, though the meters were merely the positive byproduct of some sweaty TV streaming.

I agree with Anna. 100k from October 1st is no small effort, Jack.

Sitting out FTC this year
Jack - for someone who was going to sit out the FTC, you had a pretty good showing (101,000 m). I had to nip in another 400 m just to get to 100 k at the last minute.

Congratulations to all who participated, no matter how many meters you put in, they all counted. Special mention to James and Harry who both exceeded 500 k.

I joined the Flyers for the FTC last year and have enjoy the motivation it has provided for me.
Seeing the Flyers in the top 20 for the FTC is great! Nice job everyone!

A nice FTC team placing and team average indeed, well done everyone!

In other news, I'll be doing a 24h solo row this weekend. Apart from a little cash being rounded up to help fund cancer research, I'm starting to regret it already :D

Now that the FTC is over, I turned my attention to the October CTC - a good anaerobic workout!. Managed to accumulate 0 rest meters so no math challenges for me. I imagine that several of us were waiting to finish up the FTC before attempting the CTC - my row floated boat I. We have two other boats waiting for an F rower and Boat IV needs an L and an F.

Well done in getting 0 rest meters. I thought I'd done well this morning to only get 15m. I stopped some 4 to 6 seconds before the end of each 2' piece. Tough workout for my first hard erg session in more than three weeks. I've been dealing with a bad lower back issue since September 14th and have had more days off than any time in over a year. Finally started seeing a chiropractor last week and she seems to be getting me back to some state of balance.

We now have three boats that need a lady. Any guy with a wife or girlfriend--this would be a good time to bribe the significant other with a nice dinner at a fancy restaurant, or cook the dinner yourself while she rows the CTC, or some other incentive of her choice.

Got to thinking about this challenge. My wife sez she smelled something burning. My first thought about the 4-6” of coasting not being quite enuf to produce a non-reporting wheel and zero penalty meters was that higher DF, due to the relatively higher rate of decay of flywheel velocity, must favor the hwts who can handle high DF and push a bit closer to the onset of rest period.

I had previously seen Joe Heaton’s comment in Comp subforum that setting the piece as <intervals variable> cuts off the sixth rest period because hitting the <no more intervals> button at conclusion of setup defines number of intervals. (<intervals time> knows not the number of proposed iterations and always adds an additional rest period except in the case of <rerow>.) I wonder if most of us would be more likely to omit the sixth rest by simply hitting <menu> button @ zero o’clock active if that has become our usual training execution? I conclude that consciously gaming the system OR mindlessly introducing a habitual training execution can just possibly produce much the same result.

If we have the luxury of two choices of how we set the piece in the PM, why not three? Notice that the row description reinforces this view. “Row 2 minutes followed by 1 minute rest” says absolutely nothing that prevents setting the piece as:

Time=2:08, Rest=0:52

The observance of the honor system would likely benefit from the incentivization of actually DOING a full 2’ of rowing and only 1’ of resting per iteration and should reduce the accumulation of those all important  rest meters. Thoughts? Objections? Counterpunches? KOs?

I think the intention of the piece is pretty obvious and playing with the numbers is a step too far. Why not set the PM for 2:40 intervals with :20 rest and just stop at rowing 2:00--I don't think so.

On another note, I sure hope we haven't lost Sheena and Suzanne as contributors to the CTC. Maybe the changing weather will drive them back indoors and onto the rowerg.

I assume that Linda, our team's meter-leader, will float another boat for us.

That would also produce the desired result.

Patel is one heck of an athlete. May be health setback? I think Wittenbrink has suggested that she is inclined to multisport interests. Probably checking some boxes on the rower during COVID lockdown and now finding fresh challenges and opportunities elsewhere as the gyms reopen.

Linda will definitely be doing this month's CTC challenge ...just a question of when. A little downtime after the Fall Challenge.

I echo the comments on Sheena and Suzanne. Sheena only rowed 11K in the CTC and I don't think Suzanne participated. Hopefully they will get back on the rower as the seasons change. They are missed.

Hi all! I have not totally disappeared, but yes, a health flare up has stopped me from doing much. But I got a CTC entry in there and I am planning to get back on the erg a little more regularly now that the physical fatigue is starting to ease and excited to get a little competitive again :D . Hoping to build some strength again and then get back to the beginner Pete Plan sometime in the next couple months (maybe one day I will actually make it more than ~8 weeks into it before life gets in the way ). -Sheena

Good job! And Linda floated another boat as well! We're cookin'!

Still time to get a 6th boat off the dock too with yet one more female.

First but not last, apologies for absence, Covid household, not pleasant. Suprised and not surprised how much it has taken out. A few weeks of basically anything then a couple of 5k parkruns where i almost puked at the end but nice ot have a good measure.

So 2 x CTC, last night took it easy and got no penalties. Tonight went as fast as I could, improved but lungs blown out at the end. Fell better for it though and good to be back exercising. Taken the mad idea of buying a watt bike to really attack the fitness over winter with the rower in tow. Not been a good year this one and want to step it up.

The charity row i think I'll do in January, at the moment i'll say the last weekend and make it a birthday thing. Same format. Apologies for the mucking about.

Great work everyone for keeping the motivation up, it was good to see the CTC chase and it got my arse on the seat. I'll try and get the kids on there before the weekend is out.

All the best

C
