Frontier x monitor

Post by pbs » October 1st, 2021, 6:56 am

Hi,

Does anybody out there use this sophisticated strap/monitor whilst rowing? It's being promoted by the likes of Paula Ratcliffe ( Olympic/World Marathon runner) and seems to be directed at those of us exercising with cardio health issues. Apart from general input, I'm wondering if it links to the PM5 monitor?

Many thanks.

FWIW. Seems to be a ECG strap. Electric not optical pickup. Chest mounted. "..Record high-quality continuous ECG*, during any activity, for up to 24 hours and give yourself a better chance of spotting abnormal heart rhythms..."

I've never seen a reference to using one while erging, however seems like it should work. (Or at least work as well as it does for running/biking, etc.)

If you try it and get good results please post.

Edit: you likely will have connection issues. It uses bluetooth LE (good) so it will connect to PM5, HOWEVER it only connects to one device at a time so you lose the real time feedback from the Frontier X app if you connect to the PM5. If all you want is a heart rate signal then there are excellent belts (e.g. polar h10) that cost a lot less than the $400 frontier X. If you want the Frontier X functions then you cannot connect to your PM5.

hi, there was a new version released towards the end of 2023 and i reviewed it here: https://the5krunner.com/2024/01/25/four ... -discount/

It has one bluetooth connection BUT will also fully cache the ecg track for over a day in its pod and then you can retrieve that later back to their app.

it's an accurate HRM but i couldn't verify its accuracy as an ecg. The traces 'looked' fine but i had no way to cross validate.

It's got a lot of nuanced and interesting features some of them unique. However for the purposes of people here maybe these are of most interest

1. Looks at cardiac strain by assessing the ST segment of each beat. this is NOT HRV it's a unique measure for a sports device and the device buzzes if strain occurs during exercise. if you're over 40 I guess that signals you to ease off. Fit older people who i have used this with did NOT exhibit such strain, including myself. However you could be fitter than us but still have this strain occurring
2. The ecg track is based on a 2-lead reading (ie a chest strap like polar h10 + kubios). you get a full and detailed ecg reading. the software highlights every potentially dody reading and distinguishes them from general noise.

It's not cheap. However its the sort of thing you could share around family members to check if they are ok then use it yourself during harder interval workouts just as a precaution
