Did my first HM today. I have been doing training to build up to it and was fed up following the training plan so jumped ahead 5 weeks and did it on a whim. I only decided 2 hrs before hand.
Well done Dutch. Confidence is key for the HMs so you'll be quicker next time

Thanks everyone, I must say doing it makes a 2k seem like a sprint now. It has certainly done my confidence good and I still have a very satisfied feeling today.
It certainly has shown me I am capable of plenty more as well.

I've been rowing really consistently and beating my times in all the interval sessions so I wanted to do a time trial as a tester and a confidence booster ahead of my competition in a little over three weeks time. I didn't want do a 2k as I'm really pumped to attack that hard and get a good PR and a 5k fits better into my training week than a 1k

5k row 18.15.8 at 1.49.5/500, a PR by 12.5 seconds.

pretty blown away with this. My goal was sub 18.20 but I would have been happy with anything better than a 5 second improvement.

It's an intimidating distance for me because I don't 'know it' very well and I didn't want to go out too fast - the last 2k would be a lonely place if you bonk, so my plan was to go through half way and probably 3k at my PR split of 1.50.8/500 and see what I had left and that's pretty much what I did

Time Meters Pace Watts Cal/Hr S/M hr
18:15.8 5,000m 1:49.5 266 1215 23 163

3:41.4 1,000m 1:50.7 258 1187 24 151
3:41.4 2,000m 1:50.7 258 1187 23 160
3:41.3 3,000m 1:50.6 258 1189 22 165
3:39.5 4,000m 1:49.7 265 1211 22 169
3:32.2 5,000m 1:46.1 293 1308 25 172

to be honest, I felt fantastic throughout. I delayed really putting my foot on the accelerator til about 600 out but I was speeding up all the way to the line and at the end, I still felt like I had something left. Being a little more aggressive in the first 3k or speeding up a few mins earlier would definitely be possible nest time and...knowing that I've got this pace in me now will give me the confidence to attack more.

Nice 5k but you do know you will be sub 18 if you rate higher. Would think you need to be rating 26 to 30. My PB was r30 which is only a tad lower than my 2k PB rate at 32.

Again, well done.

it's interesting Nick, because I certainly feel more comfortable ripping it harder at a lower stroke rate and I was thinking one of the reasons for the improvement was because I rated at 23/24 rather than 26 in my previous time trial. I was conscious in the middle of the row of attempting to keep it at 24 but not managing to do that.

thank you for the input though, I do appreciate it and I'll think on it. I was extremely comfortable throughout the row (no chest contractions or 'Jesus I'm not gonna make it' thoughts at all) which indicates it wasn't a max effort, so perhaps rating higher would push me more. I'm still learning and trying different things all the time, but the thought of even rating at 26 would scare me and 30 seems crazy - I think from memory my 2k pr was done at 30. Now that I've got this time under my belt, I'll use this pace as the platform for the next attempt and I'm sure I'll need to rate higher to improve more.

thank you everyone else for the 'attaboys'. I'm still pumped by the row the next day and it's given me confidence that the training I'm doing is working and more importantly the confidence to really attack my 2k in a few weeks and go for a big PR there.

I know my longer rows still a weakness in comparison with the shorter stuff, but I'm working on it and seeing all those way faster times for 5 and 10k in your signatures spurs me on

I agree there's probably more in me. Honestly, i don't feel like I know the distance at all and I didn't know how hard to row in the first half. I've still got this fear of going out too hard and suffering badly in the second half and blowing up. Next time, I'll go out at 18.15 pace and then turn the screw in the second half and see what I've got.

HD is handle down.

Building knowledge and confidence is a big part of the longer distances as there's more time to overthink, and strategy becomes slightly more important

18:15.8 5,000m 1:49.5 266 1215 23 163

to be honest, I felt fantastic throughout. <>
Bit late to the party with my congratulations here. Very nice piece, although as you felt fantastic throughout, clearly not quite fast enough!

Thought I would have a go at how far I can get in 30 mins. My previous best was 7180 back in April. Today I did 103m further and did 7283m.
I did the first 14 mins right on pace of 2.00, but by 18 mins I was starting to slip breathing was getting harder, I knew i was not going to hit 7500m. There would have been a time that this would have made me HD, but now I have just learnt to just ease back a little and then pick it up again when able. Ended with a good charge from 26 mins to the end.
I am now trying to breakout of what you might call training pace of 23 strokes and under and start doing pieces at maybe 25 to 26 pace where I am starting to feel more comfortable and deffo have a lot more gas in the tank.
I think a lot is just getting used to rowing faster and maybe not pull so hard at the beginning.

30mins, 7283m, watts 185, spm 23, av 2.03.5, df 114, hr 114.

The HM I did 5 days ago seems to have paid me back well, I now want to do a full marathon and a 100k.
I will prob do the full marathon in early November. I am going to do a a few 70 min rows and a couple of 2 hr rows first over time then just have a go as I did the HM. I am fathoming pace maybe about 2.20 for it on current estimates.

congrats Dutch - that's a very good improvement - crazy how low your HR is for a PR?
