New Member With Question
Hello everyone! I've been having a lot of fun reading through the forum - thanks for the great content and discussion! Finally decided to join after being convinced to get a rower for home use (having enjoyed my time on ergs at the gym).
My past experience has been on Brand-X water based ergos, but I really want the community feel and ability to compare my times to others that would be provided by the C2. I'm competitive by nature, and know this aspect of the community would keep me rowing long after another erg would be collecting dust. That said, I am looking to address concerns from my wife around noise level. We are closing in our dining room to turn it into an office space, and the plan would be to put the rower in that room. Baby #3 is on the way, and with the new office being directly below the nursery, she was asking about noise level. Do any of you have experience using your Model D in a similar setup? Is there any risk of disturbing sleep? I should generally be able to plan workouts around naps, but curious if I would need to. If relevant, the office has wood floors while the nursery above is carpeted.
Thanks in advance!

Re: New Member With Question
My babies (who are now 21, 26 & 29) used to sleep better when the house was noisy, it had a soothing effect that made them feel at home. When I was a kid we lived by a railway (complete with steam locos), that was never a problem until the NUR/ASLEF folks went on strike.
Re: New Member With Question
The erg fan does make a noise but its not sharp or violent and, once you're used to erging, will hopefully fairly rhythmical so may well be soporific to anyone that overhears. Having said that, although the carpet upstairs will help, an "office space" - which I'm picturing as pretty much all hard surfaces - will act as a sound box so any noise generated will be as loud as it can be in there. Soft furnishings would deaden it a bit. Bigger problem in our house is not the noise of the erg but the screams of pain coming from the erger at the end of a sprint interval session!

Re: New Member With Question
C2 model D will be louder than a water erg. The sound will be time varying, with a loud whoosh gradually dropping off then another loud whoosh 2 to 3 seconds later. As some have pointed out babies sleep well in cars and even in laundry room with the dryer running. Our oldest only slept well after we starting using a humid-ifier w/ fan noise. (humid-ifier without the dash is apparently spam - the word gets replaced by the spam filter. wow)Ramblin_Wreck08 wrote: ↑August 16th, 2021, 11:50 am... If you end up using a FAN pointed at you when you row (highly recommended) the constant fan noise will blur out some of the erg noise. You will also want a mat of some kind under the erg if the office is 60F or warmer.
C2 erg noise is not the kind that goes through floors. No thumping. Since the office is a floor below the nursery not much sound is going to come up thru the ceiling. At a guess you are OK and will not need to schedule around nap time.

Thanks for all the great replies! Much appreciated. It sounds like the general consensus is that nap time should not be an issue, but there are some things I can do to make sure I don't disturb the family (fan, mat under rower, rug/curtains/other sound-absorbing furnishings).
The key thing going in my favor seems to be that we plan to run a white noise machine in the nursery. If the C2is similar to white noise, in theory it should just blend right in. Again, really appreciate the feedback and experience!

There's not much you can do beyond building an anechoic chamber.Ramblin_Wreck08 wrote: ↑August 16th, 2021, 10:57 pmbut there are some things I can do to make sure I don't disturb the family (fan, mat under rower, rug/curtains/other sound-absorbing furnishings).

When our kids were babies, they also slept well in the room when I erged - the rhythmic whooshing sound was great white noise.Citroen wrote: ↑August 16th, 2021, 11:55 amMy babies (who are now 21, 26 & 29) used to sleep better when the house was noisy, it had a soothing effect that made them feel at home. Thanks again for all the great feedback! After several conversations with my wife, I placed an order for an erg tonight! Can't wait!

I very much doubt that anyone, adult or child will be able to hear the rower if it's in the room below. Maybe vice-versa, since it would be on the floor, which might transmit sound more easily to the lower room, but not with the nursery above.
Enjoy.
Bonus - in you few years you might have this: (not the greatest technique, but you can't beat the enthusiasm)
